Since March 3rd, 11 livestock association meeting have been held with user of the Ochoco Korest. At every meeting keen Interest has been hown, and while In a few case slock mon have disagreed with Idea advanced by the Forest Service, a a rule the luggestlons made and plan proposed have met with little opposition. We are looking forward to pleasant relation with the stock men in working out range problem which are of vital Interest to both the user of the range and the Gov ernment. One of the point of major Im portance la the establishment of a June 1 season for all cattle Instead of allowing a percentage of them to go onto the range by April 15 as ha been done In year past. The Supervisor' office ha authority to permit stock to enter IS day In ad vance of the opening date, and It will probably be adviaable to exer cise the authority given. By a later entrance date, the range will not suffer from trampling by stock when the ground Is wet, and the grass only started in many localities. The later season will also enable the Forest Service to care for much more stock than could formerly be permitted. The local office will do Its utmost to care for as many bead of stock a the range will stand, and It la believed that the total Increase will be more than 2000 head for thla Forest. Ranger E. W. Donnelly, District Ranger for the Snow Mt. District, la rpendlng a few days at the Prine ville office assisting Grazing Exam iner D. C. Ingram and the Supervis or work out allotment boundaries, etc. for range In his district for the coming grazing season. Work on the new Forest Service telephone line from Prineville east erly to Ochoco Ranger Station will be commenced at an early date. probably about April 1. Encouraging correspondence has been received from the Portland of fice relative to the early completion of the Prlnevllle-Mltchell road. The people of the Prineville and Mitchell localities should congratulate them selves if funds become available for this road during the coming sum mer. On acount of the extreme scarcity of labor, only roads of pos sible military importance are to be constructed from Federal funds dur ing the period of the war, A meeting of the users of the Maury Mt. unit of this Forest is to be held at Amnions sawmill on Apr. 4 for the purpose of cementing these permittees into a strong organiza tion to better handle this unit of range, There are possibilities on this range that are to be found on few units. The area lies In a com pact body and Is remarkably well watered for this type of Country. In addition, more than one-half of the Forest boundary Is already fenced. By-completing the fence and work ing out a proper salting scheme, It is believed this will become one of the most desirable pieces of summer range In the West. W. 8. S. SOLI) W. S. S.
