Remedies For Waste and Other Vital Phases of Rancher's Problenis Present d by College Man Oregon Agricultural College, Mar 27 That newspaper advertising for the sale of farm commodities is com ing into use rapidly because it is one remedy for the wasteful and unsatis factory methods -of the distributing system, is the opinion of C. J. Meln tosh, agricultural press editor of the college. . . "The most economical use of farm products is by the' grower, and when he has a' surplus the most economi cal users are his neighbors," said Mr. 1 Mcintosh. "The most economical I way of marketing to his neighbors is to market as nearly direct as is possible. . ' I "Sometimes growers supply their I neighbors with their own surplus through long, deyious.and expensive channels. The potato growers of Coos Bay have often sold their poto toes to their neighbors through San Francisco commission houses. There are legitimate charges, for freight, storage, and commissions which are (bourne by both consumer and produc ers. The producer gets less than the terminal price by the cost Of haul and storage, while the consumer pays , the terminal price plus storage and rehaul. The newspaper is toeal( vehicle for cutting across lots rem' grower to table." Mr. Mcintosh condemns tut use of the term "For Sale" in farm adver tisements and believes that the Hem of sale should be printed in bold face type in the first line. Leading dealt able qualities of the product should be given. "Advertisements to be successful must be based on reputable goods, says Mr. Mcintosh. "They must te clearly and simply written and they should be well displayed. The iuali ty, the quantity, the placs where In quiry should be sent, and the price, should be given. Some additional In. formation designed to create a desire for the product Is likely to be wort a. great deal more than it costs to publish it." EXTEND FREE SERVICE TO OREGON FARMERS O. A. C Solicit Farmer's Corres pondence Standardisation of Crops Advocated. Oregon Agricultural College, Ces vallis, March 81, The entire facili ties of the farm crops department ef the Oregon Agricultural college are offered to the farmers of Malheur ounty without charge. A Werking plan has Deen aeveiopea unuer which the department hopes to be of the greatest possible service to the people of the state, but the success of the tolan is said to rest upon the coopera tion of the farmers in using the help offered them. The plan is a general improvement program which seeks to improve farm crops. It covers, first of all. BBBBaV MSBSF I am BAI IM --a- -a. People's ideas are chang ing, too. ; . They're beginning to fig ure out how much it is cost' ingthem to keep a car. And the man who is doing the greatest amount of figuring is the man with the moderate price car. There still seems to be a notion in some quarters that any tire is good enough for a small car. That's not what the man who owns it thinks. In recommending and sell ing U. S. Tires we are trying to see his side of the propo sitionfinding out what he wants in a tire and giving him that III Large or small, U. S. Tires are built to only one stand ard of quality the standard that produced the, first straight side automobile tire, the' first pneumatic truck tire. v Every, tire that bears the name "U. S." is built the best way its makers know how. It isn't the car, but the man who owns the car, that counts with the oldest and largest rubber concern in the world. IV As representatives of U. S. Much work of this kind has been done in the past, the farmers af Big Esnd bnvtnf used the facilities ef the college for the purpose ef testing alfalfa and clover sd. Potato standardization Is the nex. objeotlve. The department offers to examine all seeds submitted to it for the purpose of determining its purity and Its vitality.
