TO THf BOYS AND THE GIRLS Supt. of r rott'c iiisiruc1i3fT"Alrman, Gives Boys zli G;;l$" ofi OTuft Schbsts: lAformstioa Last yea,'-aa" rWaS WfenVfepW&n lofcwr repee can get at it.'tftertj'were about GOOOO children engaged in making or raising something with which to compete for prizes in the industrial con test. That was only a little start in the work, but it was a great stimulus to fu'.ure effort. As a result cf the in spiration gained last year we hope to have practically every one of the 125,000 echoo children of the state engaged in some phase of the work this year. To those who did not get interested last year, and arc- not familiar with the rules o the contest, we wish to say that they are very simple ine most importent one is that the children must do the work themselves and that the parent or guardian will be required to sign a state- m nt to that effect. In rais ing garden, some one else may plow'" th'eT g'?ourJd4 arid harrow it, but the child must do the rest the' plaMing' cultivating-, harvesting, etc. In raising poultry the child do as not ha ve to own the parent flock', but' must set the eggs and feed and care for the chickens they exhibit. One of ttte'malh objects of these contests1 is to ge't' the boys and girls interested in doing something. To teach them to do something practi cal, something rftirtH'1 while something by which tb'ey' can earn a living when they grow tomanhood and womanhood. And the only tiny to learn how to do something is to do that thing with your hands. Ifvou should show' fiooK! for!hTtafelf 'he soon" loses re spect and confidence of others. "To thyself le true, and it follows as the day follows night that to no other man thou canst be false." Everv child should early in life irt t this principle firmly fixed in his uiiud, and through lift) never depart from' ie.1 Parents, .don't' think you are favoring your child' bf- giving or loaning him soni thing to take " to1 the fair- t6' win a prize wlth'for'ybu afe not. On the other han'd, you are doing him an absolute injustice. You are cheating him out of the valuable ex perifcirce' of learning- how' n do sofaethiri'g; aM at the same time educating him to be dishonest. Character building is the most mipoi tant part of the early educat ion ot the child, and the greatest value in these in dustrial c'om-tes tk i s" attfhg that line forming in the child habits" f industry; economy, system, honesty, self reliance jnd all of the traits that go td'niake upf the good citizen. There will be' many valu able prizes fur the children at the State b air again next yUkt but iidue :'of tliem will be worth" aa much' as a clear cbneeierice and tlie experience gained by raising or making something' with which to win built by the Portland Gas Cok com pany at the government moorings, on the Lluntou road, at a cost of $2,000, 000. Charles 8. Whlthlll, of Portland, baa written to Secretary Olcott demand lug that an investigation be irmde of the counting of votes in Portland at the last getiei'al election. Whltehlll declares that B0 per cent of the votes were counted illegally. Olcott has no tified him that the question is not coming under his Jurisdiction. Three hundred citizens of Redmond and the surrounding country partici pated Friday In the opening of the Redmond Union Warehouse company, one of the largest and most substan tial buildings of the kind in the north west. Ex-Congressman Williamson vis orator of the day. The warehouse was built of Btone, cost $10,000, and will store 200,000 bushela of potatoes. An Important decision has been handed down by the Oregon supreme court in the case of Multnomah county vs.' County Clerk Frank S. Fields. when the court ruled that county clerks were not required to pay n turaliiation fees Into ths county treas ury. In naturalization proceedings, says the decision, the clerk acts as agent of the United States and is en titled to the fees up to $3000 a year, the surplus over that ai.iount going t the government Governor West has appointed Chas Harding to be county Judge of Lincoln county, to succeed C.
