The plan is to have the house which tiear even numbers on the streets irri gate only oa Momday, Wednesday, Fri day and Sunday, and the houses which tear odd numbers on the streets irri gate only oa Tuesday, Thursday, Sat urday and Sunday. This plan will per mit every house to irrigate four days out of each week. The purpose of the Water company in furnishing water for irrigation is not to furnish all the water a person -can run through the hose in the sii irrigation hours every day, but to furn Sail enough water to keep the lawn in onditiou. Over two hundred imembers of tho Woman's committee of the Polk county council of national de fense mot in the circuit court room of tho Polk county court house this week and received instructions on the various activities tho committee is ask ed to perform during the war, from Mrs. Cha9. H. Castner, etate chairman of Hood River. Mrs. Castner who has just returned from a trip to Washing ton, D. C, where she attended a meot ing of the federal eonferenco, explain ed the purpose of the Woman's com mittee end gave a short outline of the work that was expected of them- Miss Birdseye of Washington, D. C, a member of the states relations ser vice, was also in attendance at the meeting and spoke on the conservation work being done in every state in the union. Miss Ann Turlcy of the exten sion service of the Oregon Agricultural college gave an outline of the work of the home demonstrators and explained to the assembly how such a demonstra tor might be secured for Polk county. Atwcod returned from a weeik's visit at Portland, Thursday ev ening. FUNERAL OF LUKE DIMICK. Several hundred friends of Luke M. Dimick and of the Dimick family at ttnded his funeral services held at the City Hall last Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. A large part of the attendance was made up of young people of Hub bard and adjacent communities. Luke was well acquainted with the young people at Needy and beyond and they came in numbers from there. When the casket was placed in the hall it was nearly covered with floral pieces, wreaths and garlands. His High school friends sat on the left and the immediate family on the right and the friends filled the hall and in front. Fa vorite hymns weTe sung by a doubll quartet. Bev. 8. E. Long delivered a splendid sermon from the 12th chapter of Ecclesiastes and the first verse: "Re member now, thy Creator, in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them." The public pantry plan, with piggly wiggly aisles is said to reduce the cost a fifth at least below the time honored "general grocery," reduce the time required in market basket buying according to the govern ment's wishes, and particularly re duce the wasteful hoarding and ac cumulation of things and individual investment in groceries to an entire ly new level.
