America is not only going to war but to the altar. Records for Christinas marriages have been broken throughout the country during the last 48 hours. With thousands of young men goon to leave for Franco as soldiers and thou sands of others in the various camps and contoiiments, soldiers and sailors led the greatest wedding march the eountry haii ever seen. In New York, the number of licenses issued for Christinas marriaires showed an increase of ncariy 100 per cent over Jiuo. A total or 27 licenses were issued Monday, as compared with 167 on Christmas eve last year. In a majority of cases, the bride was accompanied by a groom in the army khaki or soilors blue. No Federal Mediation In Iron Trades Strike Shops Will Not Close San Francisco, Dec. 26. No federal mediation or conferences will mark tho strike of 12,000 to 15,000 iron trades workers, which began this morning in 350 foundries and shops about Ban Francisco bay, it was announced this afternoon. "This is not a strike in which tho government is in any way affected," Pierre Flaherty, of the machinists union, declared. By tonight, he said, every union man employed in the af fected shops will be out. Half of the men on strike did not appear for work today; the others went to their regy'ar places of employment, but refused to work when notified that the demanded 10 per cent increase would not be gTanted. Simultaneously, about 2,000 men struck in Alameda county tound ries. . Officials of the California Metal Trades association declnred tho em ployers are a unit in their determina tion, not to grant ITe ten per cent in crease. "The shops will not close," said A. 55. High, president of the Main Btftot Iron Works. "If the men do not want to work without that 10 per cent in crease, all rijjht, they needn't."
