Silvertcn Loganberry Crop Is Gathered The J!tl7 loganberry crop has ell passed from the field to the juice factory and the old vines are being cut away mid the vines trained for next year's harvest. The largest grower of the logan berry in this "vicinity is Dr. C. W. Keenc who has given the fruit a trial on an extensive scale. He estimates that the crop this year produced about 60 per cent of what it should, have been in normal year. Practically all of the logali .berries grown in this part of the valley are under contract for a term if years and the rise and fall of the market for the product does not effect the grower. Dr. Kecne is optimistic about logan berries end although he has put a goodly sum into the enterprise without any visible return in profits yet he feelg that the national advertising of loganberry products will place the in dustry among the foremost of the state in time to oune. PHONE 721 Celebrated Psem Winch Caused Dip'omaiic Trcabb (Poi'tland Journal) Bunks, Oregon., A up. ft. -(To the Editor of the Journal.) 1 am sending you the original version of " Iloch ler Kaiser." It was written by a Scotch man, A. McGregor Rose, then on the staff of the Montreal Herald, and us ing the noni de plume A. M. B. Gordon. He called it "Kaiser & Co." It Was written during the Boer War, when Oom Paul went on a mission to solicit the aid of Kaiser Welhelm, which, doubtless, at the dictates of discretion alone, was not forthcoming. While possibly not up to the mark in finish and form, it is one of the niost famous lampoons in existence, a posi tion it well merits tor s keen wit and incisive satire on the kaiserly charac ter, which has after these long years ripened into such deadlv activity as to throw the whole world into despair. Thackeray or Twain never did any thing better, and to find its kindred we must go to Swift, Molierc or Aris tophanes. Very strangely, it has not become" current in this country during this, the great kaiser war, and probably not in the English press. It will be remembered that the kaiser in the early years of his reign devel oped that egotism which led him to re gard himself as the direct legatee of the Divine Might bestowed upon his illustrious grandfather. The European press treated him then with good na tured raillery, the worst notation made being that he showed stigmata of in sanity. It was his egotism which re tired and broke the heart of old Prince Bismarck, a man far too able to Tiave permitted his country to plungo into so fatal an impasse as it is now floun dering in. And Wilhelm never rested until Caprivi also passed, and he was surrounded with mediocre men, too weak and unwise to oppose his egotis tic ambitions. The lampoonist shows hiB historical insight by noting those incidents. The lampoon struck its target in this country and caused a serious diplo matic flurry at Washington, when Cap tain Coghlan of the ITnited States navy recited it at a banquet, and on the com plaint of the German government was reprimanded. The brusque and unhesitating action of Admiral Dewey with reference to German ships intruding at Manila bay was not forgotten, and the kaiser 's dig nity was deeply ruffled. Perhaps this untoward start accounts for the failure of the poem to circulate even now. The text of the poem in full follows: Der Kniser of dis Fatherland Und Gott on high all dings command Ve two ach! Don't you understand? Myself und Gottl He reigns in heafen and always shall. Und incin own cnibire don't vas schmall; Ein noble pair, I dinks you call Meinself u'nd Gottl Vile some men Bing der power divine, Mein soldiers sing "Die Wacht am Boin"- Und drink dor health in Bheiiiish wine Of Me und Gott. Grain Turning Out Better Than Expected Better than expected is a common expression from those those who have been among the first ones to thresh this year. Some of the very lute spring sown grain has Deen a disappointment, especially the oat crop Fall sown wheat is making an ex cellent showing when the backwardness of the season is considered. Home are taking the precaution to stack all their grain while others are depending on machines to reach them in time to thresh from the shock betore the dry weather changes to wet. The new crop has- already beun to find its way to Fischer's Flouring Mills for storage and sale, Silvertou Tribune.
