A d v e r t i s ing men, who are or ganized into the Assoeia ted A d vertising Clubs of the World, have seen this fact demon t r a t e d over and over, both in the rase of the ' retail store anl manufactur ers and jobbers, So, a special committee headed by Ralph Starr Butler ot the Vniversity of New York, was recently appointed, as I stated in the article which pre ceded this, for the purposo of gather ing and classifying evidence on this point. And at about the same time, a slogan, or central idea, waa adopted for the program of the convention of the Associated Advertising Clubs of the World, in St. Louis, June 3 to 7, and that slogan is "Advertising Low ers Cost of Distribution." Two Elements of Cost. Entering into the prices of every ar ticle wo buy, are two chief elements of cost the cost of making it and the cost of getting it from the maker to us. These costs, of course, must be cov ered in the gross pro'fit -which the manufacturer or tne jobber allows himself, to cover his costs and pro vide whatever net profit he expects to make. If a salesman, through any influ ence, can sell more goods in a given time (and at a given traveling ex pense), it is plain that the cost of his services will be proportionately smaller, for this cost will be diveded into a , s..ir, Touime oi sales, in dollars and KxRctly that in nn At t.A jtant things whieh follows advertising. , .....rninirg manufacturer, even aft- r 1, .. ..a... k:. . -. Most retail men-hum. t,nr. that advertised goods are reliable, aud that they sell readily, berause the pub lic know about them and believes in them. When the merchant advertises ami sells good that are advertised, he adds his advertising power to that of the manufacturer and their advertising makes a strong team. The retailer knows that the advertis ing manufacturer who establishes a wide market ,'or his goods caa sell equal quality for less than the non-advertiser, or can sell better quality for the same money. Children Cry FOR FLETCHER'S o.ASTORiA BED CROSS AT GERVAI3 Three automobile loads of the Wil lamette Red Cross society of Salem came to Oervais Tuesday night to or ganize an auxiliary in Gervais. Those who addressed the meeting were George P. Rodgers, Frank Davy, August Huek estein, Henry W. Meyers and Mrs. K. E. Fisher. George C. L. Snyder contrib uted solos and Miss Levy of the Wil lamette university, violin solos. The weather kept many of the coun try people away, but a very enthusi astic and patriotic erowd responded and fifty three names were signed for mem bership. The Gervais officers elected are: Chairman, Mrs. Sam H. Brown; vice chairman, Mrs. A. R. Siegniund; secre tary, Mrs. .T. A. Johnson; treasurer, Miss Marie Mangold. Star. The New York tvemng Sua financial review todar said: ' Today's stock market reflected con siderable initiative on the buving aide, prices advancing with few exceptions, such a the motor, shipping and rubber shares, some two points or more.
