As the annual tennis meet in Salem is held under the auspices of the Na tional Lawn Tcunifl association, the date of tho Salem meet is also named by that association. It is more than probable that several city boosting organizations that have made expensive trips each year will change their programs on account of war conditions. The first to make an announcement comes from the Seattle Chamber of Commerce to the effect there will be no marine sports this July and that the trip to Alaska has been cancelled. o A treat is in store for those who arc interested in the Grand Canyon of Ari zona nnd the desert country where the Fainted Indians live. Mr. Williamson will give a free lecture Tuesday evening at the Commercial club, with moving pictures of the most wonderful scenery in the world and with many colored stcrcoptiean views. The lecture will be given in tho auditorium of the Commer cial club and it is for the public, with no admission charge or collection! o Adolph Greenbaum, son of Isadora Greonbaum, is in Corvallis to take the final examination for admission to the naval school nt Annapolis. Mr. (ireen bauin received the appointment on the showing made at nu examination this spring. If this examination is success fully passed, he will go to Annapolis for the four years training course. T'pon graduation ho will be given the rank of ensign, equivalent to the second Hep tenant iu tho regular army, with an an nual salary of $1,700. As soon an a cadet enters Annapolis, he is put on the gov ernment's pay roll at $50 a month dur ing his years of preparation. Recruiting for the army continues at a lively rate at the Salem recruiting station in charge of Corporal A. T. Toy. This morning tho following young men left for Portland for assignment: Goodrich C. Moir, 29; George A- Cher riiigton, 21; Kulpti S. Marper, 21; Rulph Welborn, 27. These men all chose tho aviation signal corps. Today the fol lowing recruits were accepted and left VOLUNTEER SYSTEM MAY BE RECOMMENDED Washington, April 16. Two important amendments to the general staff bill were introduced ii the committee today. They will be acted on by the committee tomorrow. One amendment, by Chairman Dent. would give the volunteer system a trial but would give President Wilson power at any time to declare the volunteer system a failure and order conscrip tion. Another amendment by Representa tive Anthony of Kansas, provides for raising the army by a volunteer system. However, a military census of military; eligibles will be started at once. It, within five months, the number ot t roops required have not volunteered, conscription will be begun' immediately.
