As considerable property interests and the custody of a couple of children are involved tho divorce proceedings are being fought by the defendant who is a prominent contrac tor of this city. Schools to Open December 26. On account of more cases of measles breaking out in the oast two davs city health officer, Dr. B. H. McCallon hasport last week decided to put off the re-openine of the Dallas schools from next Monday to the day following Christmas. Among the lator cases to be reported to the health officer is that of Miss Georgia Kllis, a teacher in the city schools. Divorce Suit Granted. Circuit .Tudse H. II. Belt this week granted a dHtoree to Joseph Majaska I from Jessie Majaska on the grounds of desertion. Tbc custody of the children of tho couple remains with the mother. Dallas Man Honored. A telegram was received in Dallas, Thursday from U. S. Grant, a prqm inent Angora goat breeder of this city announcing that he had again been elected president of the National Mo hair Growers' Association. The con vention is being held this year in Galveston, Texas and Mr. Grant left Dallas last week for that city. He ex pects to return to his home shortly be fore Christmas. piasecki Resigns as Lieutenant. County Attorney-elect E. K. Piasecki has resigned his commission as first lieutenant of Company L, O. N. G., and Ms resignation has been approved by Acting Adjutant General W. W. Wil son. The papers will now have to be approved by the war department be fore Mr. Piasecki can receive his dis charge. County Clerk Asa B. Robinson, Jr., is in Portland this week attending a meeting of the county clerks of the state of Oregon. O. L. Jack Edwards was a Portland visitor last Sundav. TEACHERS AT WOODBURN. The Teachers' Institute for Marion county was held in the Woodburn high school building Saturday. This was not a compulsory convocation, but teachers, and especially the principals of the schools find it helpful to come together on a common basis- The meeting was opened at 9:45 a. m. Burgess F. Ford and R. C. Wygant dis cussed the athletic side of school life. Fannie I,. Douglas and Esther M7 Nel son presented the subject, ' ' Our School Visitors," in a very interesting manner. Short talks were given on "The Value of Industrial Work" by Osie Grice, H. I C. Todd and Mabel Doty. Palmer Co., gave an interesting talk on "Palmer Writing." Miss Conklin and her domestic science girls served an excellent dinner in the domestic science rooms. The last address of the day was given by Thomas H. Gentle on "Home Things We Do." State Superintendent Smith of Salem and about seventy-five teachers from the schools of the county attended. Since the rise in telephone rates in Woodburn a large number of the peo ple of Woodburn who have been using the Western Union telephone have been uneasy and ready to go into anything that would give them phone service at reaionab,R rates. When the fact that the state supreme court had decided against the city in its suit was fully digested there was more disatisfaction, which led to confer ences and a movement to install a mu tual automatic phone system with the ceutral in the City Hall, the recorder to take charge of the collections. Holmans have a new Ford, tour pas senger car. Mrs. Ferguson is sick with giippe. ! Charley Evans has the grippe also. Mrs. Evans and her sister are sick. Hershel Acnff, the eight year old son of Tip Acnff, was quite badly hurt last week from falling from abain loft onto a manger, two ribs were wrenched loose and his side bruised quite badly Dr. ('. H. Robertson attended him. George Mitty lias gone to Hillsboro on business for a few days. Miss Emily ( romley has started a Sunday school in Eola for the children. There was a reading by Mrs. Young berg at T. L. Acuff's Thursday from Silent Unity association litcratute. Tip Acnff is working on the road for a few days. The Eola literary meeting was quite good. The nejt one will be the second Friday in January. Supt. Reynolds visited our tehool for the second time this year. DEATH OF PAUL FRANK. After a short illness of only two days Paul Frank, a well-known Stayton man, died at his home here of paralysis at 11:30 p. m. Thursday. December 7. 1916, Paul Frank was born August 29, 1801, at New Ulm, Minnesota. He came to Oregon with his parents in 1809, and learned the blacksmith trade at Ger vais, where his parents lived, and at Turner, later coming to Sublimity where he practiced his trade for many years, later moving to Stayton. He was married to Miss Theresia Weidner in 1878, who survives him. Be sides the widow he leaves three sons, Chas., Albert and Leo and two daugh ters Mrs. Marie Kerber and Mils Leona Frank. Also one sister, Mrs. Rosa Mae rtz and four brothers, Peter, Henry. Al bert and Fred Frank, und one grand child, Raymond Kerber. Mr. Frank was always a hard work ing man, a kind father and well liked by everyone. The funeral was held from the Cath olic church in this city on Saturday, December 9, and interment was in the Catholic cemetery here. Rev. Fr. Lainck officiating. Stayton Sentinel.
