Benson, socialist can didate for president, when he addresses a mass meeting here tonight. In n statement to newspaper men to day, Benson attacked the draft clause of the bill, saying he had not yet found a person who approved it. "In this matter of the draft law. as ia some other things," he said, "the democracy of America is being tested. If wo are less democratic than the people of Australia, we will accept or draft law meekly and, when the signal sounds, will go to the slaughter. In Australia the people are about to vote lo determine whether Australian men shall be drafted into the present war, nnd womeu are voting as well as men. Under our draft law, the president has a power over American men that tho king of England does not hold over the Australians, and both republicans anil democrats voted to give it to him" Will Try to Get Better Race of Clevelanders ' - Cleveland, Ohio, Oct. 13 Dan Cupid hud a setback today when it was an nounced that Mount Sinai hospital, Cleveland's newest medical institution, would open a clinic for eugenics. BOTTLE MAKES TRIP TO SM Bottle With Note Thrown In River Here Drifts Into s Golden Gate Carl Rehfuss, Herman Rehfuss, Wil liam Rehfuss, and F. M, Young, of 825 North Twenty-first street, have had an unusual experience. On Juna 11, 1916, they went on a visit four miles down the river. While on the bank of the Willaiuetto they found several empty bottles, and with boyish imagination and romance wrote notes and placed them -in four bottles, corked the bot tles, and threw them into the river. Yesterday, October 12 they received a letter from H. K. Wood, of 50 Fair view Avenue, Piedmont, California, which. returnB oue of the notes they wrote and threw into the Willamette river in a bottle. The letter of Mr. Wood follows: "Acting upon the suggestion which I found and which I am taking for granted is yours, I am taking this op portunity of writing you. ''It seems very strange to me the journey of this message or rather of the bo"ttle. The bottle which I broko must have been thrown into the Wil lamette river near Salem, floated down the Columbia and from there into the Pacific. There it was caught In one of the numerous currents that run into the Golden Gate and into the San Francisco bay, where I found it. If what I surmise is true, then the jour ney of this slip of paper is a most ro markable one. " The note itself was stained and torn and shows considerable wear from weather. It was brought to tho Journal office this morning as evi dence of the storv. A DAGGER IN THE BACK That's the woman's dread when she gets up in the morning to start the day's work.
