Picking and the Threatened Railroad Strike is Cause Many Yet Remain (By LaMar ToOze) Newport, Oregon, Aug. 30 (Special to the Capital Journal) The story at Newport now is more one of departure thun of arrivals. The starting of the public schools, the commencing of the hop picking season and a threatened railroad strike, have stimulated beach sojourners to conclude their vacations here. In spite of these, however, a goodly crowd still remains. September comes tomorrow and it will see the .largest beach population of any Sep tember in recent years. In many respects this season has been a remarkable one. This section of the Oregon coast line has never had better weather than during the last month and a half. The fishing haB been good and various attractions like the Chautauqua and Indian fair have been most pleasant diversions. The coming of the coast wise rail road will not detract from Newport's attractiveness as a summer resort. Four hours from Portland will mean Anore week end excursionists and a larger number of permanent residents from Portland and Eastern Oregon points. A copy of the Capital Journul of September 19, ISOfi, was recently brought to the office. The farmer who talks of hard times may draw some consolation from a com parison of the prices now and 20 years ago. Then wheat was quoted at 41 cents a bushel, against the today's quo tation of $1.05; heavy hogs were sell ing for $3, while today they are worth $9 a hundred. Twenty years ago wool was selling for freight to nine cents a pound and the best offered for eggs was 10 cents a dozen, less than one half of the present quotations. Hens were worth five cents a pound end hops trom two to four cents. Tim othy liny was a drug on the market at $S.50, while the quotntion today is from $15 to $10 a ton. The best dairy butter brought 12 1-2 cents a pound while today 34 cents is the quotation. Even spring chicken was quoted at five cents a pound wholesale and now the price is 15 cents.
