Children Cry FOR FLETCHER'S C ASTO R I A THE DAILY CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM, OREGON, FRIDAY. AUG. 25, 1916. t-er.t per vvokcl for the J- THE MARKETS $ The following prices for fruita and vegetables are those asked by the wholesaler of the retailer, a-d not what is paid to the producer. All other p.-iees are those paid thn producer. Corrections are made daily. The mills nnd commission houses are still rather backward about buying wheat at the present unsettled condi tion of the market. The general opin ion is that the high prices were caused by the fact that the government was in the market and that by a combina tion of interests, the price was forced beyond the regular level of a supply and dinnnd. Af least that is the opin ion of several local dealers. If the market goes down, they were close to the truth. If it continues to advance after the government has bought, then the high price is due to the demand, nnd like everything else in the world, time onlv can tell. Oman. One-Half (Continued from Page 1.) was scheduled at Cheyenne lute this afternoon but he made a couple of brief talks at various smaller citeis en route. The theme on which he dwelt with most emphasis in all these Bpeeches was the necessity for unification of effort and co-operation of endoavor in government. The slogan "America first and Amer ica efficient," seems to have made a hit with western republicans. This, the tariff and Mexico were the subjects of Hughes' address at Halt Lake City last night. Hughes spoke in the Mormon tabernacle. He is the third candidate for president of the United Statas to be accorded this distinction in recent years. Victor Murdock Has No Political Choice Vancouver, B. C, Aug. 25. Victor H. Murdock declared today that he could not honestly cast his vote for either Hughes or Wilson. Mr. Murdock left for the tar east tonight and be fore going aboard the steamer said. "The progressive parly is not dead, but sleeping. In spite of the fact that Colonel Roosevelt has given up, much to the sorrow of progtessives all over the United States, the American people have grown tired rif tho old political parties and there must arise another movement more progressive even than that which was fathered by Roosevelt. I cannot honestly cast my vote for cither Wilson or Hughes. Never wus there a time when a man like Roose velt was more needed." Mr. Murdock predicted tho collapse of the war. "1 have just returned from the trenches on the west front," he said. "Daily the German lines are growing shorter. There will be a collapse one of these days. It is my belief t lint Germany will give in, ami that peace negotiations will be carried through without uny what shall I say vol canic upheaval.' "My opinion is that the end is not far distant; that is will be announced some day when the German chancel lor of the exchequer finds that there is no money. He will press a button, a message will be sent, aud the great est war the world has ever known will pass into history." , THE "COME-BACK" The "Come-back was was really never down-and-out His weakened condition bee a u so of over-work, luck of exercise, improper eating and liv ing, demands stimulation to satisfy the cry for a health-giving appetite and the refreshing sleep essential to strength. GOLD MEDAL Haarlem OU Capsules, the National Remedy of Honolulu, will do the work. They are wonderful! Three of these capsules each day will put a man on his feet before he knows it; whether his trouble comes from uric acid poisoning, the kidneys, gravel or stone in the bladder, stomach de rangement or other ailments that befall the over-zealous American. Some Changes Made In Postal Regulations According to the new postal regula tions, postmasters are permitted to tie into separate packages letters and par cels for the soldiers on the border, ac cording to regiments and batallions. Another regulation is to the effect that New Foundluud from the stand point of the mail services, is not to be regarded as part of Canada. Parcel post packages to Cuba are limited to a weight of four pounds and six ounces. A parcel post agreement has just been made with Cuba, whereby 11 pounds is the maximum weight to be mailed to that country and the length must not exceed three feet and six inches. The rate is 12 cents a pound from the I'. K. to China and 35 cents a pound from China to this country. SHE DRANK POISON Portland, Ore., Aug. 25. "I have poisoned myself!" shrieked Mrs. Lot tie Erickson, river steamer stewardess, after swallowing turpentine and gaso line in a soft drink emporium. She is near death today. Cent per word for NO PRETTIER SIGHT ANY WHERE WITH GOOD ROADS ALL WAY SAYS ALBANY DEM. There can be nothing prettier any where in the world than Silver Creek Falls, forty miles from Albany, up in the Cascades in Marion county, ns one views them from a shelf in a path back under huge rocks directly under the fulls. It is a sight to make one feel one's smalluess compared with nature's offerings. Yosemite hus its bigger shows, but nothing neater than this. The writer, who suw the falls for the first time yesterday was filled to overflowing with the splendid sight. The trip there was made by three sisters aud their hubbies, of which the writer is one, going in by way of Marion, Staytoit and Stiblimitv and coming buck by way of Sublimity and Aumsville, much the belter route. The roads are in splendid condition; in tho vicinity of Sublimity and Aums ville and further up 111 the mountains, some . of them macadam made, and practically all of them ure in fine run ning shape. Iu the Silver Creek Fulls district the tax payers themselves havo ap propriated ten mills a year for tun years for road improvement, und they arc getting it under skillful builders. We passed a high class road roller, another machine and a scraper. It is a slam on valley people to have it sunt that they are making better roads up in the hills than down here, but they are doing it, One thing is that they have the rock for the purpose. Clear up on the hill just before reaching Silver Creek Falls we stop ped at a house, a neat dace, for water, and had the pleasure of meeting Percy H. Brown," a bachelor, which we men tion for the benefit of young ladies who would like to get up X T'1"! world, besides Mr. Brown is a fV "is On the way in we ah .ass.. 1 four young lailies, two lroui 01 erwood and two from Salem, on a hike to the falls, for a several days' visit. They were well togged for the trip, one of the girls in short dresses, one in bloomers, two, one of them Miss Mc Lngan, whose folks live near Tangent, but who resides in Salem, in short, comfortable neat looking pants, that made the girls look like movie ar tists. They walked fifteen miles yes terday and were certainly some hun gry wheu they reached the fulls. Above the falls Mr. Vol, has a neat park fur visitors, charging 25 cents for a ut os and five cents for single per sons, with tables for lunches, and oth er conveniences. He has been there fourteen years. But the falls are the leal things, own ed by T. C. Smith, Tom Kay and oth ers of Sulem. They ure immense as a spectacle, but it is doubtful if they will ever have greut commercial value be cause of the low water in summer, when the power is bound to be low; but for scenery the place is superb, and many visit the fulls and leave enthused They arc twelve miles from Silverton and all the way from six to sixteen miles from Sublimity. Distances are un certain. One of the itirl hikers said that for ten miles, people told them the falls were three miles away. In the vicinity there is a hamlet with a population of about a hundred, with a school of fifty or sixty, and u church. Along the way, nil kinds of crops look fine ami farms prosperous. Among the visitors at the purk yes terday were Dr. Webb, a prominent physician and family, of Mt. Angel. There were a number of others, but Sunday is the big day, a crowd being there Inst Sunday, among them five auto loads from Albany.
