Scout With General Pershing
Gives Glimpse Into Soldier
Life In Mexico
Tack Boyd, now serving as scout in
General Pershing's army, has written a
letter to his niece, Miss Helen Huber,
of this city, giving some interesting
sidelights of conditions in that region
in Mexico in which the punitive expedi
tion is now operating.
The letter was written June " at
Namiiptipa and reads in part as fol
lows: ''We have had a dusty, windy, time'
of it. .More dust than I have seen in all
my life. It is very dry. Must of the
country has been burnt off for linn-;
dreds of miles in every direction. The
people here have been robbed until they
have little clothes or auything else left.
They have so few pot and pans that:
when the nuto trucks first came here.
some offered as much as two dollars
for an empty five gallon oil can.
I "If you have ret(d the account of the
j Columbus raid aiid the part the bandit,
Cervantes, had in it, of his cruel treat--I
meat of Mrs. Wright after he hud kVlled
her husband, you. will be gratified to
j learn of his death at the hands of one
I of our infantrymen at Cruses, .10 miles
I frnm here. His body was brought here
the next day on an auto truck. His aid
was nls killed. Several of the scouts
and .Mexicans .whjj. knew Cervantes
