The Home- cut, the m HOSE Truck Is Damaged But Driver and Horses Escape With out a Scratch Responding to an alarm turned in from the Owl rooming house, at the cor ner of Commercial ami Ferry streets, about W'.lo this morning, the entire ilepaitinent turned out mid the crtn- binatioii hose truck and auto pumper arrived at the scene on record time. The fiinnn, however, turned out to be a false one. Following the auto pumper on the call to tiie fire, the fire team with the hose wagon was unable tci make the turn at the corner of Chemeketa and ('oni'iieri'iul streets and ran into the lnorwav of the Salem-Falls City Lum ber company's office. The tongue of the hose wagon hit Hie mail box on the corner and threw it aeiws the street, tearing the iron cluster lighl post up by the roots and then splinter ed itself iu'tlie corner of tiie building. The front trucks were driven back uu- ler the wagon and it will reouire 11 general overhauling before the wagon will go to any more fires. The team was iu charge of Driver Pete Phillips, who said that nt thn rate of speed he was going the horses were unable to make the turn on the slippery pavements.
