The Motor Car Industry
EVERY few dnys something happens
to call the attention of the think
ing men to tlio tremendous growth
Of tho motor cur industry, 1'iftoen
years ago an automobilo was a toy.
Ton years ngo it had been so fur per
fected that far-seeing business men
had boconie interested in the business.
Since that timo thousands of engineers
the world over havo devoted their time
and intellect to tho building and per
fecting of motor cars, trucks and trac
tors so that now utmost every man,
woman or child knows something about
tho gnsolino driven vehicle.
Automobiles and trucks, to say noth
ing of motorcycles, havo bocomo so
common on the streets and roads that
they have censed to attract any par
ticular nttcnlion. Hut oven with all
this thero are few people who realise
to what an extent this industry has
already grown.
As near as figures can bo gathered
according to tho lending motor maga
zines whoso authority is not questioned,
thero is in present uso practically a mil
lion and n half automobiles and tho
amount of money invested in this
enormous number of machines could
hardly bo estimated.. I'robably fifteen
hundred dollars as an average first
cost would bo low, but this umount
totals more than tho entiro produc
tion of gold since Columbus discovered
America.
ino Automobile Trade Journal In a
recent issue, makes nn estimate in It's
editorial column that tho amount of
money spent this year, 3M1 4, for pleas
ure machines ulmio, will bo six hun
dred and ninety million dollars, mid
this takes no account of trucks or trac
tors. This Is almost seven dollars per
capita for every man, woman and child
under the American flag. It is surely
g wnndrrlul business to bo built up In
practically ten years.
The snnio authority goes on to stnlo
that at least ono hundred and fifty
million dullars of this enormous sum
is being expended this' your for light,
cheup cars, of the class represented by
the l'ord, and It is interesting in this
connection to follow out tho reason
for this great demand for cheap cars,
rrlmunly the small light car is not a
pleasure ear, for while there nro thou
sands of them seld for that purpose,
they are rather nu nil purpose cur de
signed fur business uses and utilized
for plcnsuro Incidentally. The cheap,
light ears like tho Ford, MeU, Hup

ami tho small studebaker and Buick
have built up their business because
thero was a demand for the cheap
car. This has been especially true of
the Ford, which was tho first cheap
automobile mado that was a roal-auto-
mobilo. Tho result has been that they
aro expecting to turn out 300,000 cars
tho present year.
This movement, or the development
of this industry, is along the lines of
evolution. All business is built up in
response to a demand, otherwise it
would not bo a staplo business. Trob
alily no ono thing has caused as much
study and thought as tho question of
rapid individual transportation. It
was this that built tho bicycle, then
the safety and then the automobilo,
but after the automobilo had been me
chanically perfected the tendency in
prico was np instead of down, so that
tho poor man or woman was little hot
ter off than before until tho cheap
automobile camo into use. This is the
tenturo that creates tho demand for a
still c lien per car and that will build np
tho cycle car Industry evon faster, In
the opinion of most authorities, Hun
tho automobilo business itself has been
built up. Tho eyclo car business will
in no way affect the general auto
mobilo business it is a now branch of
tho Industry.
Tho fact that there la a demand,
and nn enormous demand for eyclo
cars, is fully borne out by tho state
ment thnt thero nro olrcody nearly
thirty factories In the East, all of them
being offered uli of tho business they
want, and ono of tho latest in tho first
four months has sold 0,000 cars. These
little cars sell in tho East nt IX'iO,
and np until Iho establishment of the
Elbert Motor Car Company In Seattlo
thero havo been no factories on the
Pneifio Const. Tho new company le
building a car that sells for t-M, and
is receiving inquiries for cars and for
ngencles from such widespread sources
and of such a chnrncter that they aro
firm in the belief that they nro going
to bo offered a tremendous volume of
business.
Tho geographical position should give
tho local factory finlt cull on tli.0
business of the far Enst, much of which
has heretofore been handled in Europe,
and much of which is new business.
Naturally tho European manufacturers
aro at the present timo unable to de
liver the goods, and there nro very
few of them tlwit mnnufucturo narrow
tread cars.
Tho narrow tread car seems to be
absolutely essential for tho Chlneso and
Japanese trade, principally beeauso
they must follow narrow trails. The
enr must be chenp in first cost, low In
upkeep, tlmplo In construction and hnvo
sufficient power to go nnywhoro there
Is a fair road.
There iloes not seem to be nny limit
to tho business that can be built up by
a factory on this const. Many author
ities nro firm In the belief thnt the,
light car business will within five
years equal Ilia present volumo of the
entiro Industry.
This does: not seem unreasonable
when wo tako Into consideration the
fact that thero nre over 100,000,000
peoplo under the American flag, Cer
tainly not nil of them could own even
a cheap nutomnblle, but that iiiauy
people will count for ninro than Sli,

each five families could afford mo

One excellent exercise for bringing
into piny unused muscles is that of
steadying oneself by holding lightly to
tho back of the chair and then kicking,
not excocdingly high, eight times with
each leg twico to each side. It is said,
too, that besides exercising unused
muscles this exercise frees and stimu
lates tho largo nerves of tho lower por
tion of tho spinal column, and this, of
course, makes for health. This oxcrciso
may bo repeated overy day or every
other day to advantage.
