Oregon Agricultural College, Cor vallis, Or., April 28. la co-operation with the department of Agronomy at -the Agricultural College 120 farmers of the Willamette Valley and the (oast counties -are making extensive ! eld tests in the vellue of ground niestone to acid soils. The purpose the tests is to secure reliable data of the effects and profits of lima on sour soils, and to ascertain the outside rices that may be pnrd for ground mestone that is used at a profit. If these experiment demonstrate the agricultural value- of lime- at prices- that it may. be produced for, its use on sour soil would be greatly stimulated with resulting gaiu, to crop roditction- throughout' the region- af- ected. Bawd on laboratory tests conducted by irofessor H. D.- Seudder, tho policy of applying lime to acid soils will be profitable at prices not to exceed $3 per ton for tie ground mestoue. W ith a sufficient supply at this price or less, it is believed by Professor Scudder that farmers or tno Willamette Vsifley alone would con sume 100,000 tons of ground limestone annually. The deficiency of line produces conditions undesirable in many ways. The chief injury, according to- Pro fessor Scudder, is due to its unfavor able action in the development of itrogen-gathoriug bacteria. This bac teria, which are closely associated with the legumes iu extracting nitrogen from the air, prefer a sweet or alka line sou. Other atdvantages of lime aro its effects on the physical condi tion of the soil and in releasing plant food not otherwise available.
