chargiil with the murder of Thomas
Vaa Pelt, was held by Judge Wood, of
Curry county, to appear before the
grand jury at its next session. Bail
was fixed iu the sum of $30,000.
Bail was furnished and Cooley was
released pending the April term of the
circuit court of Curry county.

Seattle, Wash., Jan. 13. George S.
Ferry, engineer of the Milwaukee over
land fast express, the Olympian, drop
ped dead, of heart disease at his throt
tie yesterday.
Death occurred soon after Perry had
won a race over a rival train on a road
that parallels the Milwaukee near East
on, just before the roads begin to climb
the steep grade up the east slope of the
Cascade mountains. After Perry's train
had passed its rival and gone through
Eaaton at full speed, W. W. Holton, the
fireman on the engine, looked across
the cab and saw that the engineer was
dead. Holton took Perry's place and
drove the train to Laconia, on the west
slope of the range, where another en
gineer took charge, and ran the train to
Seattle.
Perry was one of the oldest men in
the employ of the Milwaukee, having
been in the cab more than 40 years,
During that time he had never figured
in a wreck. He was 65 years old yes-
terday and his friends had planned
surprise party for his home coming.
Many of them did not know of his
death until they went to the railway
station last n it-lit to accompanv him
home to the birthdav festivities.

head crushed, apparently by some heavy
instrument, probably a shovel, an uni
dentified man, about 4 years old. was
found early today between the West
ern Faeifie tracks here, and is dying
at the Emergency hospital, a victim of
thug, the police believe. There was
no clew to the assailant, or to their
victim, in whose pockets only 10 cents
were found.

CROSBY.
At a local hospital, Sunday, January
11, 1914, William J. Crosby, aged 43
years.
The remains were sent to Tacoma,
Wash., yosterday afternoon in charge of
J. F. Dawson, brother-in-law of the de
ceased, for interment.
STRANG.
After suffering several weeks from a
paralytic stroke, Mrs. Lillian A. Strang,
wife of A. E. Strang, the chief engineer
at the asylum, passed away at her home
last Sunday.
Mrs. Strang was a native of Salem
having been born here. She was a
graduate of Willamette University. On
September 1, 1S36, she was married to
Augustus E. Strang, and Rev. P. S.
Knight performed the ceremony. She
is survived by her husband and one son,
Jessup. Her parents are Dr. and Mrs.
H. C. Carpenter, of Portland.
The funeral took place today at 2
clock p. m. from the residence and
Rev. P. S. Knight officiated. The re
mains were laid to rest in I. O. O. F.
cemetery.
