pads rotrs FINANCIAL CONDITIONS 1 111 OREGON ARE GOOD State Bank Examiner Wright Shows Gratifying Financial Situation In This State. GREAT INCREASE IN BANK DEPOSITS DURING PAST YEAR Only Two New Banks Established Din ing Period, But Banking Capital Increases Million and a Half. That financial conditions in Oregon re healthy is reflected in a report of the conditions of the banking institu tions at the close of business October 21, as announced by Will T. Wright, state bank superintendent, today. Mr. Wright says the statement is one of the most gratifying ever made in the history of the department. It will be the last one this year, and virtually it a report of the conditions for the year. ' In comparison with a statement of November 20, 1912, the one nearest to the date of the call this year, material increases are shown in all departments, that in cash and bank balances being $3,286,519.25. The Increase in deposits is $7,840,558.24 and in bank savings is $1,874,465.10. In postal savings the in crease is $307,140.76. The combined savings are $2,181,605.86. Tho total re sources are $169,462,383.08. All Banks Show Gains. "The report shows," said Mr. "Wright, "an unusually healthy finan cial condition. Substantial gains have been made by all the banks, the in crease in cash and reserve boing espe cially large. With only two new banks OH! There were 170 state banks and 86 national banks at the close of business October 21, while there were 171 state banks and 83 national banks when the final report was made last year. COLLEGE Y.M.C.A. MEN WILL COME HERE The annual convention of the college Y. M. C. A. of the state will be held in this city December 5 and 6, under the auspices of the Y, M. C. A., of Wil lamette University. Over 90 delegates will be here from the different colleges of the state, and the local 'varsity Y. M. C. A. has its bands full with the task of securing en tertainment for the delegates during the convention. The convention wKl open at 2:30 on the afternoon of December 5, and con tinue until 4:30 on the afternoon of December 6. The association is asking friends of the university to open their homes to the delegates, giving them lodging for one night and breakfast and lunch for December 6. The association has made other provision for their en tertainment tho romainder of the time. NON-PARTISAN JUDICIARY SYSTEM FAVORED BY BAR Before adjourning at Portland, the Oregon State Bar Association passed a resolution in favor of a non partisan judiciary systom by a vote of 35 to 25. Eobert F. Smithwick, of Portland, Or., afisitant engineer on the Portland, Eugene & Eastern railroad, wag killed instantly at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon at Porter, a railroad crossing on the Port land, Eugene & Eastern lines, 12 miles north -of Eugene, when a gasoline speeder upon which wore Mr. Smith wick and two companions crashed into an autamobilo. M. B. Whitney, of San Francisco, a special representative of the Southern Pacific railroad, and J 0. Yoakum, of Albany, Or., an employe of the Portland, Eugene & Eastern, were slightly injured. The automobile contained four men connected with a local real estate firm All escaped injury. The automobile was on tho track when the speeder dashed down at ter rific speed. So great was the impact that Smithwick was hurled 30 feet and fell, his skull being crushed, prob ably from impact with a rail. Scawcll, an artist, son of Superior Judge J. M. Seowell, charged with a statutory offense against Olga Ander son, aged 17, was arraigned here today before Police Judge Shortall. His pre liminary examination was set for No vember 28. Scawell was released on $3000 bail. It is a poor joke that humiliates othere.
