Love couldn't be otherwise than sweet, as its principal ingredient is "U..f,-.. OPEN FORUM. KEILEBEKGEB COMES BACK AT THOSE WHO DISLIKE VIEWS Editor Journal: Some folks are wor rying about the German society aud their atand on drinking beer. Of course, there are some Germans and many others that are so lacking in self- control that they can't trust themselves to liva whero orderly,- well-regulated saloons are licensed. They evidently don t believe in man's being a free moral agent. They haven 't the back bone necessary to stamp them as peo ple of high moral character. The Ger man loves his beer, as our society has aid, but he prices, above all, the free dom to exercise his choice to take or leave. If man were not flesh, and if all temptation could be removed this world would contain no more angels than it now has. Restriction breeds hypocrisy. e believe the question is not "whiskev or no whiskey," but rather tho well regulated control of thelbpior traff'C in an orderlv manner, as or pnse, to irregular secret sale by irre sponsible parties. We detest the hy pocrisy which blinds itself into believ ing that writing a law not fully backed by public opinion into the statute books will better this world. Whence comes the univeranl contempt of law in this country f The German pride themselves en their patriotism, en the fact that they are In a high de gree a law abiding people. We duly aologlre to the Dutch Yankees who have swapied their stnrdiness ef char actcr for a spineless hypocrisy that won't permit them to trust themselves alone in the dark with a jug of liquor. W claim that lh freedom to Jerri choice-la what builds up ft character, vea though it errs at times. Ai'Gv Kninmr.no F.n. Prertidcnt German Society.
