Day, of Pendle ton, has returned to their old Salem home for the winter. Chas. Z. Randal! has opened law of fices in the Salem Bank & Trust build ing. James Jones, of Marquam, Ore., was brought to the Salem hospital yester day with a broken leg. Mr. Jones' leg was broken by the swep of a hop baler, which flew from its fastenings. A deputy sheriff of Multnomah coun ty, arrived last night and took charge of E. D. Rike, who wa arrested hero by Deputy Sheriff Needham, at the Portland authorities' request. Kike is wanted on the charge of non-support. Fire nearly ruined the home of V. J. Dcmogalla last night about 9 o'clock when a blaze broke out in one of the outside rooms. Two rooms wore gutted before the department was notified. The department succeeded in saving the other part of the building, after some hard fighting. V. O. Shipley, who re sides next door to Mr. Domogalla, dis covered the flames and turned in the alarm. No one seems to know how the fire started, as the owners of the place were not at home when Mr. Shipley saw smoke and flames coming out of the window. The Salom hospital has a new house doctor, In the person of Ivan Bellinger, of Scatts Mills. Dr. Bollinger is a grad uate of Willamette University, and is well known horc. The office was full begin ning at an early hou this morning and at fl o'clock a Bcore of local people called for the purposo of registering. In order to handle the crowds yes terday, the members of tho fair board posted themselves on tho outside of the main gates and sold admission tickets. Each member took in not less than $200 during the short time they wero out. Mrs. Gcorgo Anderson, who resides on South Liberty street, is being visited by hor mother, Mrs. Elmira Hamilton, of Coos Bay. Mrs. Hamilton's son and daughter are also visiting Mrs. Ander son. Mrs. Hamilton is a former Salom resident. Still as clever as ever In apprehend ing the wily thief, Harry Minto, who is acting as deputy sheriff this week, caught Thomas Daune, aged 19, an old time smooth-fingered crook, getting fa miliar with tho pockets of peoplo stand ing around the Oregon Electric depot. Daune was promptly arrested, and his case will bo investigated. For insisting on making a racket with an auto horn yesterday afternoon H. Tyall was arrested by Officers Woolery and White. Tynll kept up a continu ous honking with an auto signal on Stnto street, and became so annoying that his presence was moro agreeable In jail. They look to Salem. A complaint to rocover $101.48 was filed in the circuit court this morning by the Rodgors Plumbing Company against A. Wilson. Tho plaintiffs allege that the defendant issued a promissory note in his favor and has refused to take same up. Attorney foes in the sum of $43 is asked also in the com plaint. T. G. Groebel, who was arrested yes terday on tho charge of non-support, was haled boforo Justice Wobster this morning and after pleading not guilty, was held under $250 bonds for a hear ing Monday. Thomas Dunnio. charged with vagrancy, was also arraigned this morning. Duanio pleaded not guilty and was placed under $!i0 bonds to ap-M-ar next Monday. The defendants failed to furnish bonds and were taken back to the county jail whero they will bo confined until time for hearing. Deputy Shoriff Esih has so arranged his force this week that it is extremoly dangerous for a crook to opomto in this city or at the fair grounds. He has in stalled II. P. Minto and Ram Burkhart as deputies, two of the most experienc ed criminal detectives in the state and they nro working on the streets both day and night. Tho sheriff is also out after tho lawless class that gcnornlly follow the fair circuit and the county jnil is already holding five suspects who have attempted to operate. An auto driver this morning showed himself to be an expert at the trade by averting what would have resulted in a bad collision at the intersection of State and Liberty streets. Another ma chine wtts traveling south on Liberty while tho handy driver was proceeding cast on State. Tho machine going south shot out from behind a Chemekcta street car and failed to observe the other nuto approaching. The automo bile running on Stnto was stoored Into the curb with such force that It mount ed tho sidewalk with the front wheels and stopped, while the other machine swerved to tho left on two wheels and came to a stop within a few inches of another car standing on the corner. The woman was the wife of Lieutenant S. T. Stahre, of the Seattle fire department. When Stahre returned home last night he found his wife in convulsions and tho baby dead. The woman died before a doctor could bo summoned. "I was so slow," the woman wrote in a noto found in the house, "it got on my nerves. I'm a wreck, but I cannot tinln if T nnn't .1 U 1 1 1 and the children. I can't cook or any 1 thing else. My husband is a good man and has been helpful to me, but I am a failure. The rumos wore vague but plainly related to an alleged attempt to "fix" the ver dict one way or the other, and it was thought possible sensational incidents might result. PUBLICATION DECLARED LIBELOUS BY COURT The grand jury considering several cases this afternoon made a present ment to Judge Kelly inquiring as to the nalure of criminal libel. They wanted to know if tho publication of an article ia the way of an affidavit would be li bel if tho newspaper ownor did not vouch for it. Judge Kolly said it would be libel and such an indictment must be found. This means that J. E. Hosmer, of the culverton Journal, will be indict ed for libeling the Mt. Angel convent.
