Inside intelligence on Sunday's ball game. The Portland Transporta tion club is coming to Salem with the fastest players available, well knowing that the 0. S. P. are seeing red over their defeat by the Senators, and will no doubt prove in Sunday's game that they are second to none. Preparations are being made by the Western Union Company to install time and signal clocks in Willamette University. The clocks will be so con nected with alarms that students will be called at the beginning of each class. It is believed that the new system will not only be beneficial to the pupils, but will eliminate a great amount of bother for the teachers A serious conflagration was nar rowly averted yesterday afternoon on Nortij Twelfth street, when Professor J. T. Matthews and son were success ful in putting out a grass fire which was eating its way toward a residence belonging to E. Tanner. The Tanner family was not at homo, and had not Professor Matthews and his son done some fast work, the house would have been burning shortly. Miss Clara Mosher has returned from a six-weeks vacation trip to the east. Miss Mosher visited various points in Uanada along the Canadian Pacific road, through St. Paul and Superior. Miss Mosher will be in Salem for some time and will deliver another course of lec tures in September. Next Saturday will see the end of all saloons located in or near railroad sta tions, the law passed at the last session of the legislature, making them illegal, becoming effective September 1. The fight to do away with saloons in rail way stations was started by Governor West more than a year ago, when an offort was made to close the bars in the loFferson-street station, in Portland, through injunction proceedings. It de veloped that the existing law relating to the subject was not sufficient to clnse the saloons and n new one was passed. The law affects a large number of saloons throughout the state. So far ns is known, the saloon men have no in tention of fighting the law. Mr. Dalrymple states that it is evidently the work of some young boys, as many valuable rings and brace lets were lying in plain sight upon his wife's dresser, but were not touched. He declares that bureaus and side boards were rifled and the contents scattered about, but only the gun and the watch were found missing. Breeze Gibson says there are so many autos in Polk county, that the dust on tho roads is getting well mixed with gasoline. Breeze told a reporter confi ilentially, that this caused much trouble because the hens wallowed in the dust. until they got so much gasoline in their systems by absorption, that when they tried to announce the arrival of a new horn egg, instead of cackling, they honked. This mado them swell up, each imagining she had laid a goose egg, and then they quit laying any old kind of eggs.
