Come Early Matinee Every Day, 2 p.m. TODAY AND TOMORROW With tho total amount of taxes to be collected from Marlon county tax pay ers ranging in tho neighborhood of $811,641,27, the tax roll was turned over to tho sheriff for collection today by County Clerk Gehlhar. The cor poration tax roll, which amount to about $100,000, is still in tho hands of the clerk compiling the Bame, due to tho late date on which tho state tax commission made Its returns to the county clerks throughout tho stato. With the exception of the corpora tion tax, the taxable Items and the amount of the tax are as follows: State and county and roads, $376, 943.83. . School, $116,857.34. Special road tax, $28,914.51 Special city tax, $158,925.56. Ex-Sheriff H. P. Mlnto was the first person to remit the amount of his taxes and receive itlie first receipt this year. He called for his assessment the first thing this morning and settled his account with Sheriff Each, County Clerk Gehlhar had submitted liis ap plication for a statement of the amount of his taxes, but by some unknown! hook or crook, the ex-sherlff beat him to tho honor of being the first. Sheriff Eseh declared .today that the clerks who compiled the tax roll this year are deserving of great credit for the manner In which they expedited their work, and that the taxpayers should bo grateful to them for they performed diligent work in order to place the rolls in the hands of'the col lector In due timo to send out state ments to tho taxpayers of tho amount of their taxes. A hardship hns been undoubtedly worked upon tho county clerk Inas much as the state tax commission has hceft slow In turning over the amount of tax assessed to the corporations in Marlon county. Tho county clerk is inable to compile any figures In rela tion to the corporation tax until the commission makes Its annual repor,t, and Inasmuch as. the report Is not forthcoming until up to within a week of the timo when the roll shall have been completed, It Is almost an lm)OS slblllty to render nny definite state ment until the telephone, railroad and telegraph linos have had their valua tions determined. The regular tax roll Is not necessarily prepared for collec tion at this time, but in order to ac commodate tho public, tho roll has been placed In the hands of the sheriff 'n order that ho may answer requests fpr statements of tho taxes of those desiring to tako advantage of the .re bate granted up to tho fifteenth of March.
