VTJi time her technical knowledge has ripened. She plays with astounding finger speed and wonderful elasticity of touch, by reason of which her passage playing was not once worked down to llfe lossness, but was done with delicacy and airiness, nnd a most charming grace. Her dynamic scale embraces everything from the most delicate pianissimo to tho most fowerful forte, the latter never becoming brutal, on the contrary she even here retains her elasticity of touch, tho tone being beau'lfully full' and round, ns Indeed beauty of tone is one of the charac teristics of hor playing. C, Jan. 21. A heavy snow, which began falling at 10:30 o'clock Sunday night and continued until noon yesterday, seriously Im peded Vancouver's . traffic arteries. The streetcars were only able to maintain a "now and .then" service. On some lines the snow had drifted so deep that thoro has been no traffic whatever. On others a few cars were successfully operated, but all more or less delayed.' Three snow plows wore put out early and have been kept busy. Snow gangs have been busy with their shovels. OLGA STEEB I ERFORMS UNPRECEDENTED FEAT What Shall a Man Drink ? A quostlon much In the publlo mind nowadays Is "What shall a man drink?" Or rathor, what may he drink? "Water," you say, "of course." But the purity of our water supply Is the problem In every large, city. As an old proverb puts It: "God defend ma from the still water, and I'll keep myself from the rough." Quite recently the people of New York have been warned against the water by the head of the Health Department, and have been urged to boll It before drinking. Have you ever thought of the enormous oast and labor this would Involve, If It wore carried Into general practice? The fuel, tho Implements, the lifting, fetching; the serving and replenishing on every floor of every tenement; In every restaurant and office; In publlo places and drinking fountains. Truly It Is a "counsol of perfection," which Is practically hopeless. Why Drink Water When ,You Can Get SALEM BEER "It Is In the breweries that sanitation has been brought to ns nearly perfect condition as It Is pos sible In a food-producing establishment. The water used In the material Is distilled. The hops and malt are absolutely clean before being permitted to enter Into the manufacturing process. The vats, pipes, etc?, aro not merely washed, but scalded and thoroughly sterilized, And as If that were not enough, when the beer Is placed In bottles It Is pastouriced by being run through hot water, which would kill every germ which might have escaped the warfare conducted nriimt It In tho process of manufacture. The person who opens a bottle of beer Is assured absolutely that what ha has bofore him Is a product absolutely free from gorms and perfectly clean. It Is also true that hs may know that he has before him the only manufactured food article which! may be said to be absolutely clean." i . Salem's Famous Bottled Beer Is especially brewed for dotnestlo use. Its alcohol contents are Just sufficient to pleasantly stimulate and Invigorate. f -7 ' ,., ,. SALEM BREWERY ASS'N. SALEM, OREGON After her great European successes during the season of 1009-1910, Miss Steeb returned to California for a short tour. Appearing in recital and concert at San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles and other points, us well as making a visit to the City of Mexi co, where she also played with extra ordinary success. In Ixis Angeles Miss Steeb played to 6000 people In seven concerts, each succeeding audi ence being larger. After this tour Miss Steob returned to Berlin, whore she was billed to play nine concertos In threo cvenlngB, In March, 1911, a feat that no pianist In history before nor since has attempted. It was freely predicted In Berlin that MIbb Steeb would break down before tho concerts were finished, and it was generally said that this feat would bo Impossible for any person to perform. It was In deed a daring thing for an artist who had novor played with orchestra to an nounce such a stupendous series of programs. Her successful accom plishment completely dumbfounded and baffled her critics, several of whom said "Uh-bo Americans they I enn do anything and accomplish the seemingly Impossible." The Children Must Work Themselves Last year, us near as wo can get at it, there were about 00,000 children engaged in making or raising some thing with only a little start in the work, but it was a great stimulus to future effort. As u result of the inspi ration gained Inst year we hope to have practically every ono of tho 123, 000 school children of the state en gaged In some phase of tho work this year. To those who did not get interested last year, and aro not familiar with the rules of tho contest, wo wish to say that they aro very simple The most Important one is that the chil dren must do tho work themselves, and that tho parent or guardiun will bo required to sign a statement to thut effect. In raising garden, some one else may plow tho ground and har row it, but the child must do tho rest the planting, cultivating, harvesting, etc. In raising poultry the child does not have to own the parent flock, but must set tho eggs and feed and cure for the chickens they exhibit. One of tho main objects of those contests is to get tho boys and girls Interested in doing something. To teach them to do something practical, something worth while, something by which they cun earn a living when they grow up to manhood and woman hood. And the only way to learn how ,to do something is, to do that thing with your own hands. If you show something that somo ono elso has raised or made, you are chaetlng your self out of the most valuablo part of tho contest experience gained by do ing it. yourself. Not only that, but in showing some thing Hint is not tho product of his own effort ho Is practicing deception, cultivating dishonest)' and laying the foundation for a Hfo of dishonor and trouble. He may be successful in de ceiving others. No ono but himself and tho members of his own family may ever know that ho has cheated, but that is enough. In doing what he knows Is not right he loses respect for himself, and that Is a long Btep In tho wrong direction. When a person loses respect for himself he soon loses the confidence and respect of others, "To thyself bo true, and it follows as the day follows night that to no other man thou canst be false." Every child Bhould early In llfo get this principle firmly fixed In his mind, and through llfo never depart from It Parents, don't think yinu are favoring your child by giving or loaning him something to take to the fair to win a prize with, for you are not On the other hand, you are doing him nn ab solute InjujBtlce. You are cheating him out of tho valuablo experience of learning how to do something, and at the same time educating him to he dishonest Character building Is the most important part of tho early education of the child, and the great est value of theso Industrial contests Is along that line forming In the child halills of industry, economy, sys- em, honesty, self-rellnnco and all of t,ho traits that go to nuiko up tho good citizen. There will he many valuable prizes for the children at the state fair again next year, but none of them will be worth ns much as a clear conscience and tho experience gained by raising or making something with which to vln tho prize.
