OOUMKIIl'IAL, ('OK. COl'lti SOCIETY Again we find ourselves in the whirl of Chrlstmastide, with the days speeding on to a New Year. Oregon has no occasion to envelope us In a blanket of snow or to freeze our streams three feet down before we can realize that St. Nicholas Is about to appear. Something Intangible warms our hearts alike, while we welcome the joys and excitement of the season. We are glad with the happy nnd sorrowful with those whose clouds are not yet lifted. And we all remember the Babe In the Man ger, so many years ago, and the Star of Rethlehem, which will never set. The year has been a prosperous one for Sulem, whose future seems brighter than ever before. Particu larly noticeable Is the fact that so ciety events have taken on a metro politan air which is assumed at the most informal affairs.' Simplicity of entertainment Is surrounded by the niceties of refinement, while the more pretentious affairs are stamped with an elegance found only in the larger cities. Salem hostesses have responded roost cordially to requests for assist ance from the society editor and to them is given all credit for the vastly Improved condition of this department In the Capital Journal. Contributions to the music columns have added a most interesting subject in connection with the society work, and the classi fied club notes are meeting with grat ifying approval. To friends and patrons, the society editor sends heartiest greetings, A Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. Mr. and Mrs. Asahel Bush, Jr., are lcing felicitated on the advent of a Friday morning, December twen tieth.
