A Merry Christmas!
To our many customers, old
and new,
That tho one hundred boys now at
the State Training School may have
an enjoyable Christmas day, is the
expressed desire of Superintendent
Halo. Among these boys, ranging '
ages from ten to eighteen, are a num
ber who are homeless and friendless
with no one but the State to whom
to look for ChrlHtnms cheer. There-
j fore It Is asked of all good people, who
have a warm spot In their hearts for
Iboys In general and a desire to make
! someone happy, that they share their
blessings with these boys and show
toward them tho truo spirit of Christ
iinas. In tho lino of gifts, such arti
cles as lraoks, stationery, games, mit
tens, and handkerchiefs will be ac
ceptable. These things afford not
only pleasure and comfort, but be
j cause of the gift, also fill the lone
some corner In the heart of the re
ceiver. J At the school, great preparation Is
being made for tho holiday Benson.
; On Christmas day m labor but that
which Is absolutely necessary will be
performed. The entire main building
will be beautifully decorated with Oregon-grape,
mistletoe and festoons of
fir boughs, and In the chapel a huge
tree will bend under Its weight of
good things which delight both tho
eye and the stomach of the boy. Here
will bo hung tho presents sent by the
friends and relatives and for each liy
there will be a generous bag of candy
and liutB, furnished by the stale, Old
St. Nick himself will appear to iIIb
pense these gifts, Immediately follow
ing the program which Is being espe
cially prepared by members of I he
boys' choir, At noon a big dinner will
be served, many extra and specially
Inviting dishes being prepared which
will be suro to tempi. Ihe boyish ap
petite. By theso things It Is hoped
the day will bo inado a memorable
one k all tho boys and that, those to
whom homo is but a name may receive
(some little touch of the birthright
which has not been theirs.
The majority of our wards are good,
average- boys who have- made but one
mis-step, or who, through tho Influ
ence of bad company, have become
cureless !'!" Indiscreet, thus making
it necessary that they should be placed
In charge of the school for a time
with t lit- hope of helping them to see
I bin there is a bigh standard attain
able by all who will try for It; that
they must ever be on the alert to
cultivate that, which Is pure and up
lifting, and to shun lhal which is de
grading and destructive to their man
hood. Most of us who nre older do
not have lo think very hard to remem
ber llltlo Irregularities of our boy
hood days which wo called pranks,
so let tis, with Christian charily, do
our little part at this glad Christmas
lime In contributing to tho happiness
of some of theso moro unfortunate
boys who are dependent upon lis for
care and kindness nnd whom tho Slate
of Oregon is trying to mold Into good
and useful citizens.

wny conducive to their pleasure. One
of the chief features of the evening
will be the Christmas tree following
tho program. Santa Clans has been
cordially Invited to be present, and It
goes without saying that he has ac
cepted the Invitation and has sent
word In advance that nono will bo for
gotten. Most of the pupils will spend their
vacation either nt their homes or with
friends nnd will lcavo tho Bc.hool the
day following tho Christmas exercises.
Work will bo resumed on the 30th.
Venerated Santa (iaus. of Im
memorial good cheer will visit the
1"L"J wurdB and the liini employees at
the State Hospital this Vuh-tlde with
usual ceremony. The management,
pursuing Its unvarying policy of eager
ness to favor the Individual wishes
of Its Inmates, and i ccognl.liiB.
they do, that none would (eel more
keenly, Blnce nono would be more sen
sibly affected by an oversight of the
ever-bounteous annual visitor than
they, are planning to make this a gala ,
season in every particular. Of course, J
relatives of many of (lie patients will . J
thoughtfully contribute to their wishes
and sometimes even others arc
prompted to mako gifts.
To make Chrlstniasti.le a festive sea
son, fulfilling nil Its traditional im
port, Is, accordingly, a natural se
ntience of tho program. The menu
card of Christmas eve will embrace,
such an array of edibles as would not
bo rejected by epicures of plethoric
fortunes. It Includes wholesome dain
ties and delicacies, the I'ruils of cap
able culinary endowment in the kit-
jehen of the hospital, from products
predominatingly of the Institution
farm.
