THE CAPITAL JOURNAL present campaign, Roosevelt was lam pooned for standing by these princi ples while president and Taft was lauded to the sky for deserting the psrty standards and principles. Even the densest thinker on the sub ject will concede that the Republican position upon the tariff Is correct so far as the Interest of the worklngmen Is concerned. The only drawback in this connection Is permitting the pau per laborer himself to come here and work for European wages after we have excluded the pauper-manufactured article. That is a question of foreign Immigration. Many Republi can tariff beneficiaries engaged In manufacture should be censured for employing this cheap foreign labor, for while enjoying the monoxly cre ated by the tariff, they also take ad cantage of the cheap labor Imita tion. So far as trusts are concerned, we all know that you can buy ready n.ade trust articles much cheeaper than you can buy the raw material nnd make them yourself. There Is another way of looking at the Wilson vote. Is It altogether in dicative of the effort to defeat Roose velt, or Is It a (I'cided repudiation of the Chicago convention? Some years ago tho Republican party In Oregon split over somo such Issue, resulting In Democratic victory. One wing still fiat'-rnlzes with the Democrats and tmn-nortisans. while the other, the Im movable wheel-horses, are still wait ine. Thev are In the minority, but still believe In their future. They rep resent the Taft element In Oregon, while the other wing went to Wilson and Roosevelt Whether the present national victory of the Democrats will weaken this segment of the old party depends upon the tenacity with which thev will cling to the wreck. The people of this state have plain-, school. 'y spoken that they are done with par ly lines (at least for tho time being i and are ready to sn aside tli" clier i,:i,wl bulwark railed the primary law so linely drawn, scaled according to In dividual prospects in I lie event of Tuft's 'election, that the regular machinery was set aside and a new stall' created known as "Taft managers" They proceeded to elect Taft. Hut this new body of political workers, before they had proceeded very far, made the same mistake that was mnde all over the United Slates, 1. e., they got so wrap ped up in defeating Roosevelt that they forgot to elect Taft. Much br.s been raid about Roosevei standing aside for Taft at the Chicago sler.m-roller convention. Very little has been said about Taft landing aside for Roosevelt at that same con vention, when Taft well knew that Roosevelt bad (he maporily ' of dele- gates. (If Taft. didn't know It then. he does now.) It was national secret at the time thai the people didn't want Taft any more than the convention wanted Roosevelt. It wouldn't surprhio us very much that If the people could referendum the last election, they would declare against Wilson, call (mother election and elect Roosevelt. Judging from tho Progressive vote, It Is easily to l- s 'en w hich w ing of the Republican party Is in the ascend ency, .lust w here all tills ixillllcal pot pourri is to end Is hard to tell.
