Far bo It from me to tench Inatten
tion to the duties and responsibilities
of life. Nothing In the words of Jesus
or the Apostles iidmoulshes or exempli
fies carelessness In respect to health,
manhood, womanhood, education, good
name and a proper provision of the
things needful to the present life. The
Cnspel of Jesus and tho Apostle, how
ever, tells us most distinctly Impresses
upon all the followers of Jesus -that
their consecration as disciples of Jesus
means their death to worldly ambitious
for wealth, praise of men, political
ollli e and the giving of chief concern
to the preservation of their earthly
lives. It exhorts that these are ull to
he considered quite secondary to the
new ambitions, the new Ideals, set be
fore uh In the (iospel.
The followers of Jesus lire enjoined
to do good unto all men as they have
opportunity. This would Include, of
course, everything akin to social uplift.
Indeed, we cannot imagine that liny
ono could be a Christian u follower of
the Lamb of (iod without having n
deep sympathy with everything- apper
taining to the welfare of humanity and
a Hoclal uplift. Hut the Apostle's ex
pression, "as wo have opportunity," Is
a limitation. The mission of tho Chris.
tian Is not social uplift. That Is not
the work to which the Lord Jesus and
Ills followers dedicated their lives at
least not the kind of social uplift gen
crally understood.
A Sooial-Uplift That Will Succeed,
The whole work of Cod In connec
tion with humnii Redemption is to lie
an uplifting work for Admit and hit en
tire rare, 'the uplift which Cod has
planned mid which He has revealed In
the Illlile Is to be a most thorough one
such as humanity has never conceived.
It Is to be an uplift menially, morally,
and physically back to the image and
likeness of Cod lost In L'don, redeem
ed at Calvary. This social uplift of
mankind which Cod Is Interested In,
and of which Cod Is the Center and
Fulcrum, Is the line hi which all the
followers of Jeiiun, rightly Instructed,
nrn more Interested than any other
people In (he whole world.
However, the followers of Jesus nro
soldiers of the cross under Ills Cap
taincy, and they are not ut liberty to
follow theories either of their own or
of other men respecting the way In
which the great work of uplifting tho
world Is to be accomplished. They
are deeply Interested In everything
which men and women can do for the
betterment of humanity In any and
every sense of the word. And, us
they havo opportunity, they are glad
to give a word of encouragement and
appreciation, or occasionally a helping
hand. Hut theirs Is a far more Im
portant work. They aro co-laborers
with Cod-not with men.
Cod's I'laii Is llrst to select the
Church, the Hody of Christ, to be Ills
Joint-heirs In the glorious Messianic
Kingdom. Then He will use that
Kingdom for the thorough and com
plete social uplift, which nil agree Ih
so necessary. The world pees not the
nivlne Plan, mid even the Message of
tho draco of Cod is foolishness to
Ihcni; hence also the world may prob
ably think of Jesus and Ills follower
as chimerical. Their theory, Cod's
testimony. Is foolishness to tho world
and those wlio follow the I'lvlne nr
rangeuient, a St. rani says, are
counted fools all tho day long be-
nuse they are spending their lives for
the accomplishment of things which
the world cannot see. understand, ap
preciate -"the deep things of Cod." (I
Corinthians II, 10.)
Forms of Godliness.
The (iospel of form and ceremony Is
not. always hypocrisy. If reverential
forms and chants and printed prayers
always came from the heart anil were
never merely forms, there would be
much In them to approve and enjoy.
Still, ceremonies are no part of the Cos
pel of Christ, nod to put them Instead
of It Is to make of thein false (Iospel.
Who will way that either Christ or any
of tho Apostles presented n (iospel of
forms and ceremonies?
The huuiiiu heart Is deceitful nliove
all things, say the Scriptures. It like
to delve Into worldllness nml frivolity
and sometimes Into win, and then to de
ceive Itself Into believing that It Is the
Clect of Cod and a special subject of
Ills care and sure of heavenly glory.
Many such appear to know nothing
whatever respecting the (Iospel of
'hrlst. Theirs Is a (iospel of gooU
works, donations to hospitals, to social
uplift mid Church work and forms aud
ereinonles. They feel a burden roll
away when they repeat weekly tho
phrase, "We have done those things
which we ought not to have done, and
have left undone the things which we
ought to have done, and tliero Is no
health In us. He merciful to us miser
able sinners."
Hut any suggestion that these are
miserable sinners and need to know
the way of the Lord more perfectly.
and to become Justified saints If they
would lie helix of Hod, they would re
sent. The (iospel of formulism has done
great Injury to such people, many of
whom, rightly Informed respecting the
iospel of Christ, might be greatly
blessed, sanctlllcd, and made meet for
the inheritance of the saints in light.
As an Illustration of tho religion
stupor produced by the (iospel of
formulism and ceremony, let nie tell
you of a gentleman of prominence In
London whom I met recently. He
said, "I was out to hear you last Sun
day. I was one of that audience of
thousands, anil I want to tell you that
you dlsturlwd me greatly. I did not
come away from your meeting linpr
and contented, but the reverse. I was
disappointed. Why, the way you pre
sented the matter, showing the terms
and conditions .if illsclpieshlp In the
narrow way, and cross beurlng In the
footsteps of Jesus, shocked mo. I said
to myself, Then I am not a Christian
ut nil. I have not even taken the llrst
steps In the Christian way, Hut win
I went home my good niotherlii-huv
said, 'Do not lie alarmed at all-stick
to your own religion.' "
The (iospel of Christ was waking
that man up out of Ills lethargy of for
niallsiii. I told him that I sought to
do my duty In presenting the Cosisil
of Christ In no uncertain terms and
that If lie should profit by my message
and become a Jolnt-helr with Jesus In
Ills Messianic Kingdom as a result of
being waked up, he would thank me
for It to all eternity.
Gospel of Hell and Purgatory,
Of all the various tilings substituted
for the (iospel of Christ the most aw
fill iiervcrslons are the dispels of Pur
gutory and eternal torture. Yet so
perverted Is the human sensibility to
the Truth that If one said he "heard a
real OoHpel sermon," the majority
would understand It to mean that ho
heard horrible misrepresentations of
the Dlvlno character and purpose to
the effect tlmt nearly everybody all ex
copt the Hiilntly are enrouto for tor
turo at the hands of demons, and that
the saintly few are to got to heaven
and to all eternity look over Its battle
ments at their brethren and sisters In
torture and to all eternity to hear their
walls of distress.
How terrible the perversion which
could call such stuff "good tidings of
great Joy which shall tie unto all poo
pie!" I ... i glad that the Illlile Slu
dents, recently In Convention, repudl
ated such a Cuspd as being the one of
the Illlile, 1 was glad that they called
upon the minister everywhere to de
dare themselves In no uncertain terms
ami I was glad to note through the
newspapers a very general repudiation
of tho torture (iospel. Nothing that
the heathen have Is as bad, and the
wonder is that missionaries have made
any progress whatever In heathen
lands. For the real Gospel, I believe
the real heathen are in readiness,
hungering the Mohniumedan also.
Ths Gospel of Faith-Healing,
Fallli-licaHiig Is another of the
false gospels opposed both to the letter
and the spirit of Jesus' teaching. Not
a single one of the Lord' disciples
was lien led miraculously, nor a single
Prophet of old. The miracles which
Jesus performed were wholly upon
outsiders, not His dis dples, anil were
Illustratli ns of how Himself and Ills
Church In Kingdom plory will bless,
heal, uplift and restore all the families
of the enrth-all the willing and obedl
cut. St. Paul bie"se. nankins and
hitndkcr.'hicl's to lie sent to the nick
but never one of tliei-e Has sent to
the brethren. When Timothy was
sick, St. 1'iml Instead recommended a
change of diet.
Many dear Christian people are mis
led by the spurious statement of Mark
1(1: "These sign, shall follow them
that believe," etc. They cling to the
passage even after being given abun
dant proofs that It was added to the
Scripture In the Seventh Century, and
that It was omitted properly from the
Kevlsc'l Version. So deeply seated Is
the lo'-e for the (Iospel of healing,
that thin pasr.ve Is clung to hy some
even after It Is pointed out to them
that they would not dare to eat and
drink poisonous things, as It mentions.
Tiie (iospel of Christ, as applied to
this Age, Is the very reverse of the
gospel of hulling. Jesus, who was per
fect, laid down Ills life lu doing good
for oilier. His Apostles did the same.

The True Gospel of Christ.

poses to bless the world through the
Seed of Abraham, and that Jesu glori

sage respecting III Kingdom which
shall shortly lie Inaugurated with pow
er and great glory for the blesslus; of
Adam ami all his race with human
Itestltutlon, gtvii'g to all fullest oppor
tunity of return to the Heavenly Fa
llier'a love through the merit of the
great Sacrifice accomplished at Culvnry.
It Is a Message, too. that the Itedeem
er. before taking the Throne of His
glory, lu harmony with the Divine
Program, is now calling, choosing, and
proving a "little tlock" of Is-Hevers Jus
tilled through faith In His blood.
The.ie are to lie made perfect through
suffering, through mcritlce, by walking
In the Master's footstep. They have
the promise that If they suffer with
Him, they shall also reign with Illm;
If they bo dead with Illm, they shall
also live with Him. Whoever see,
hears, appreciates, this true Gospel of
the Craee of Cod In Christ finds In It
the power of Cod unto salvation. The
more fully he receives It the more does
ho possess tho power of the Truth,
which. If co-operated with, will work
lu Illm to will and to do the Father's
good pleasure and eventually make
him nil heir of God and a Jolnt-helr of
Jemi Christ the Lord to tho Heavenly
Kingdom and eternal life In glory.
