The veternn Salvation Army leader wan unconscious for 48 hours before he died. The medical bulletlnB had not revealed the seriousness of the gener al's condition which for a week, it now la admitted, wan hopeless. Twelve weeks ago General Booth underwent an operutlon for the re moval of a cut a rue t In his left eye. For two days after the operation Indi cations gave hope of his recovery. Then septic poisoning Bet In, and from that time, with the exception of occa sional rallies, the patient's health steadily declined. General Realizes End. The evangelist died In his residence, the Itockstone Hadley Wood, eight mile from Ixmdon, whore he had been confined to his bed since the operation. Present at the bedside when the end came were Mr. and Mrs. Bramwell Booth and their daughter and son, Ad jutant Catherine Booth and Sergeant Bernard Booth; the general'! youngest daughter, Commissioner Mrs. Booth Holberd, and Commissioner Howard, Colonel Kltchlng and Dr. Wardlaw Milne. Successor's Name Is Sealed. . Public Interest now centers In the question of a successor to the late commander. Under the constitution of tho Salvation Army, the general nomi nates his successor. This General Booth did several years ago, placing the name In a sealed envelope, which was deposited with the Salvation Ar my's lawyers with instructions that It should not be opened until after he died. Though nobody knows what name the envelope contains, the general be lief In the army Is that It will prove to be Bramwell Booth, who for 30 years has been Its chief of staff. When General Booth will be burled has not been decided. While evory English member of the Salvation Ar my is convinced that no man was more worthy of Interment In Westminster Abbey, It Is not expected this monor will be awarded to General Booth by the Abbey authorities. It Is the gen eral belief that the commander-in- chief's last resting place will be along side that of his wife, who 21 years ago was burled In Abney Park, Stoke-New-lugton. Mrs. Mary Hubbard, aged 87, died at home of her son, John Hubbard, In I.'ulias. Monday. The civilized world at large has an uneasy conscience on the subject of warfare, and views with distrust the formidable and cumbersome paraplier nalla with which every military power is continually armoring Itself. During the customary summer maneuvers, on land and sea, at home and abroad, the number and variety of these munitions are greatly augmented, and Improve ments abound. As a result, the Sep tember number of Popular Mechanics Magazine contains fourteen articles describing new military equipment and Improved methods. In Kngland a dum my village was built to serve as an artillery target; model aeroplanes were used in studying the aerial-Invader problem; an enormous tinval drydock has been constructed, anil ex periments are being conducted with a new automobile wireless outfit for use In the field. In Frunce, where the Importance of the aeroplane In mili tary tactics Is viewed niost seriously, the question of which aeroplane, the pursuer or the pursued, would have the advantage In nn actual aerial com bat, hns excited hened discussion, nnd a military aeroplane with fnlciln wings has been devised. Also, remark able hospital-like motor ambulances for field work were exhibited at the recent French maneuvers. Russia and Germany, too, have been productive in this line of achievement, and the Unit ed States has contributed something new to nearly every phase of the ser vice, from marching to flying. The September Popular Mechanics Magazine contains In all 322 articles and 280 Illustrations. CHESTER Arrow Kotch COLLAR Cluctt, Pmbody ft Co., Troy, N. Y. The September Woman's Home Com. panleu. The September Woman's Home Com panion is the fall fuBhlon number. Un der the direction of Grace Margaret Gould, who edits the fushlon depart ment, women are shown how they may dress fashionably and yet economical ly. There Is a great variety of fashion articles and Illustrations, Including all the latest news from Paris and New York, which, as everybody knows, are the center of dress Ideas. Miss Gould's great contention Is that women can keep In style and yet not spend extra v- agnnt sums of money. She proves her point ably and presents It cntortaln Ingly. Special articles contributed to the September Companion are: "The Town Hud No Slums ; "Three American Duchesses," being an Intimate account of the Duchess of Manchester, the Duchess of Roxburgh?, and the Duch ess of Marlborough; "What Men llavo Meant In My Life," being an extremely personal article by a great profession al writer; "How I Sing 'The Rosary', an article of advice to singers by Er nestine Schttmnnn-Helnk, a great op eratic and concert Btar, and "Playing Fair, a practical talk to business girls, full of stories of actual cases and other real material.
