(Elk) Convention, July 8 u IS, 1913 1 'rTHT.fi "J:.4 Read The Journal For Newc wnson DEMOCRATS CLAW .REACTIONARIES IN HIS PARTT ARE CONCEALING THE FACTS AS TO HIS STRENGTH WITH TAINTED TALES OF HIS WEAKNESS. Washington, D. C, May 16. (Spec ial). The action of the Pennsyl vania state convention In adopting a resolution endorsing Governor Wll son for the Democratic presidential nomination, and binding all the dele gates to' support his candidacy, means that he will have the loyal support of the 76 delegates from the Key stone state at all stages of the con ventlon. , It Is the opinion of practically every well-informed Democrat and a great many Republicans In Pennsyl vanla that Governor Wilson is the one Democrat who can carry that state In the event of hla nomination. Representative A. Mitchell Palmer, who achieved a splendid personal vie tory In the state convention. Is strongly of the opinion that the New Jersey governor would carry the rock-ribbed Renubllcan atate of Pennsylvania against either . Roose velt or Taft. Mr. Palmer, who re turned from Harrisburg today, said: It was the general feeling amongst Democrats of all shades at the state convention that Woodrow Wilson can carry Pennsylvania If the party Is wise enough to nominate him at Bal timore. From the beginning of the campaign for the presidential nomi nation, I have believed that with Governor Wilson aa our candidate we would have a chance to carry Penn sylvania this fall, owing to the wide spread dissatisfaction among the Re publicans of the state with the Pen rose machine and the great popular ity of Governor Wilson with the bet ter class of Republicans, as well aa with all classes of Democrats. "The events of the last few weeks and especially of the last few days In the Republican party In Pennsyl vania have vastly Increased the bit terness between the factions of that party and I am now confident that Governor Wilson will carry the state If he Is the Democratic nominee for the presidency. "I think Governor Wilson would be as certain to carry Pennsylvania. whether the Republican nominee be Roosevelt or Taft, as he would be of carrying his own state of New Jersey. "I know something of the feeline that exists betwen the Flinn, Magee and the Penrose factions, and I know that as a result thousands of Pennsylvania Republicans will vote the Democratic ticket this fall rather than support either RooBevelt or Taft. Governor Wilson, more than any other man being considered for tho Democratic presidential nomina tion, possesses the qualities calculat ed to attract Independent Republicans." The t eactlonary press will not mib- Hsh the truth about Governor Wil son's candidacy. The subscribers of one of the great press associations, which featured Speaker Clark's vic tor in Maryland, do not yet know that Governor Wilson carried South Carolina and Porto Rico the same day. Maryland only gave the speak er 16 votes, while South Carolina and Porto Rico added 24 delegates to the Wilson column. This Is a typlcaMn s la nee of the suppression of news with reference to Governor Wilson's campaign by supposedly fair and dis interested news disseminating- organ izations and publications. Governor Wilson has a greater strength today In actual delegates elected to the Baltimore convention than any of the other candidates, but this fact Is carefully concealod In the reactionary press. One of these pa pers that has been most notorious In misrepresenting the Wilson candi dacy published a table of convention strength today, and credited to Gov ernor Wilson a total of 13 vote. Governor Wilson has committed to his cause 2.12 delegates, a larger number than can bo claimed by anyl other candidate. One of the tricks employed by the allies at this particular stage of the Democratic presidential pre-conven-tlon campaign la to mislead the pub lic with tainted news stories fore casting anti-Wilson results In states that have not yet held primaries or conventions, and which are certain to elect delegates committed to the can didacy nf the New Jersey executive. The allies put out a story under a Detroit date line last night Indicat ing that Governor Wilson would lose in Michigan. This yarn was a pure man ii f net ii re. Woodrow Wilson will have the 30 votes In Michigan, and a telegram to Woodrow Wilson hoad quarters today from S. W. Beakec. of Kalamazoo, who is running the Wil son campaign In the state, states that the New Jersey governor will have suffer from a Inactive liver bowels? weak stomach, or clogged HOSTETTER'S Stomach Bitters Is the medicine you need. Mr. Beakes wired: "Governor Wilson will have all of 200 majority in the state convention that .assembles the 15th. Delegates numbering 429 are under Iron-clad In structions to vote for Governor Wil son. Two counties with 40 votes have Indorsed his candidacy, and 191 of the 613 unlnstructed delegates are strong Wilson men. There Is no ' doubt of the convention result" This cheering message to Wilson headquarters Is corroborated In all statements of fact by Representative Albert Burleson, the chairman ot the Democratlo house caucus, who has Just returned from Michigan, where he went by Invitation to address the democracy of Bay City. He reports that the Democratic sentiment In Michigan Is overwhelmingly In favor of the nomination of the New Jersey governor at Baltimore. Another tainted news story has been put out from Nashville wltb reference to the action of the Demo- cratic county conventions in Tonnes. see. This yarn sought to Inform the publlo that there are sufficient In structions in the county conventions to Insure the. state delegation for Clark. As a matter of fact less than one-ten to. of the delegates elected to the state convention have been in structed for the speaker. A message to a member of the Tennessee Con gressional delegation today said: Very few of the delegates to the state convention are under Instruc tion. Clark has less than one-tenth ot the delegates Instructed for him, and bis convention strength la far lees than that of Governor Wilson. The big . fight Is whether or not the delegation shall go unlnstructed. " Final Exhibit The art class, which gives its final exhibit on Thursday, Friday and Sat urday of this week, extends a cordial Invitation to all to vlalt the studio and see the work. On the walls, among selections from the studies made during the year are many clover and promising things and gives one to regret that more time and opportunities cannot be given these ambitious young artists. Since the weather has permitted the class has painted from landscape, going out two afternoons of each week. Salem's envlros offer much palntable material and these excur sions have been both pleasant and profitable. A separate section of the exhibit Is given to work by members of the Sketch club, which met once a week from the beginning of the year until spring vacation, giving students a chance to draw and also to find out that It Isn't as easy as It looks to sketch from the moving figure. The Improvement of those who have only this one hour a week to sketching Is quite marked. The special pupils exhibiting are Marie Apless, Dorothy Buchnnr, Mary Coner, Rosamond Gilbert, Ruth Mitchell, Klwlna "Schramm, Mrs. O. W. Scott, Blnnch White, C. T. Eppley and iouls Johnson. The Sketch club Included most of these and In addition, Paul Anderson, Ethel Case bore, F. D. Hawley. Formerly If a man didn't turn In a full account of all his personal as sets to the tax appraiser he was merely fibbing. This year he commits perjury. The tax asesssors are now on their rounds. This Is the open season for truth-telling. Every man must make oath to his schedule of personal property. "Are you sure you have listed all your personal property In this sched uleT" asks the assessor. "Yes, sir," you reply, right boldly. "You have given here all the money you have In bank?" "Yes, sir." There Is a quavering Intonation In your voice. "Then stand up to be sworn," says the assessor. i i You hesitate before the oath-giver. You color up. You swallow hard. You have $1,000 In the bank, pay ing three per cent Interest, or $30 a year. One thousand dollars, scraped together through sacrifices. You didn't go anywhere on your vacation last year. Your wife has made over her last year's bat You have had dry-cleaned your last summer's suit because you considered that you couldn't afford to put up $15 for a store suit. You have denied yourself the thea ter for two years; you have cut out smoking, and you take your lunch in a place where they serve coffee and rolls for five cents. And all this self-denial Is to one purpose you are planning to build a home. Now, If you tell the truth about the $1,000 In bank It will cost you $15 In taxes, or one-half of the Interest you draw from the bank. Fifteen dollars Is exactly the price of the suit which you denied your self In order to swell the bank ac count.. It would have ..bought- your wife two hats. It represents 300 five-cent cigars. These thoughts race through your mind more quickly than the time It takes to tell them. And there is the cross current echo of the assessor's words: "Stand up- to be sworn." And then you Well, what do you do under the circumstances? Cincinnati Post. The question ought to be "what should a man do under such circum stances? If the taxpayer Is one who favors a system of compelling everv one to pay according to tho value of his property, no matter In what shape that property may be, then he should have the courage of his convictions, should truthfully declare the exact amount he has In bank and the ex act value of everything else he may own, He has no right to evade the consequences of a system which he has helped to fasten on the people. He should take the dose of his own medicine as gracefully as he can.
