Lon Angeles, March 13. That the
fatal shooting of J. Edwin Edge by
viola Carver, aged 23, formerly of
Tacoma, waa accidental will be the
defense put forward by counsol ap-
pointed to defend the girl according
to general belief her today. Mlsa
Carver ltoutly avers that she went to
Edge's office to kill herself In his
presence, and that the revolver was
discharged accidentally when she
drew It to turn on herself the bullet
entering Edge's brain. Police detec
tives who have been Investigating tbe
case, declares this theory easily tena
ble.
Dry-eyed, but nervous, the girl is
waiting the arrival of her father
and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Carv
er, who are hastening from Tacoma.
Her greatest anxiety appears to be
that the public will place a wrong
Interpretation on the motive of her
crime.
"I'm a good girl," aha reiterates to
Interviewers, "and Mr. Edge was a
fine, upright man. I don't want peo
ple to think that anything was
wrong."
Miss Carver shot Edge, who was a
realty dealer, 23 years old, in bis of
fices here Monday evening. She then
attempted to kill herself, but the
hammer of the revolver, fell on an
empty chamber.
A. coroner Inquest over Edge's
body will be held tomorrow.

Iios Angeles, March 13. Southern
California is recovering today from
the effects of one of the severest
storms of the last five years. Dam
age amounting to more than $100,000
was more than offset by the Incalcul
able benefit of the rains to crops In
every county in Southern California.
Los Angeles streets suffered heav
ily. Storm drains were broken and
many basements In the wholesale
district of the city were flooded.
For several hours, street car and tel
ephone traffic was demoralized.
Three inches of rain fell in Ven
tura In three hours and great floods
of water rushed from the hills
through the business wet lon. The
damage there was estimated at 125,-
000. At Long Beach and San Pedro
small craft were carried to sea and
minor damage done along the water
front
Sunshine and blue skies followed
the storm today. ,

FUNERAL OF GIBSON
THIS AFTERNOON
. The funeral of Robert Gibson,
whose death resulted from Injuries
received hy a caving bank falling on
him while at work laying sewer pipe,
about a week ago, was held from the
undertaking parlors of clough & Leh
man this afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev.
H. T. riahcock officiating, and Inter
ment was made In I. O. O. F, ceme
tery. His cousin, Robert Gibson, who

is employed on the Oregonian, was
present and Donald Barron, of the
Owl Construction company, for whom
he was working when the accident oc
curred, took a deep interest in the
matter, and saw that everything pos
sible was done both before and after
Mr. Gibson's death, He had left with
Mr. Barron the addresses of relatives
in East Turston, Scotland. His father
died a short time ago, and his mother
has been In poor health since, so that
news of the accident was sent to oth
ers to break to her as seemed best.
He left a special request that Miss
Anna Rlddell, of Felton, be notified.
An autopsy was made by Dr. Cart
wright, who found the seventh cervical
vertebra broken and displaced In Biich
a way that It had nearly severed the
spinal cord. No inquest was held,
and probably none will be.

Jerome F. Jones, of Salem, filed
his application yesterday to be a
candidate for nomination on the Re
publican ticket for representative.
He says In his declaration that he
will advocate and propose such
measures as will make for the bene
fit of the people of the stats of Ore
gon. He will oppose any Increase In
taxation and will advocate retrench
ment whenever it can be done with
out Injury to the public weal. He is
in favor of the Oregon system and
will defend It whenever it Is at

railroad has announced the purchase
of the Bellingham Bay & British Co
lumbia railroad for something under
$10,000,000. ,
The new branch runs from Belling
ham to Sumas, on the British Colum
bia line, and taps a rich mineral and
timber country. The purchase in
cludes terminals and water frontage
In Bellingham and the only dock in
the city.

Aerial Rescuer Wanted.
Vienna, March 11. Eight persons,
including a farmer, his family, and
three boatmen, are In dnnger of star
vation on a small island in the Dan
ube, opposite Paks, In Hungary,
which Is cut off from the mainland
by drifting Ice, and, as there seems
to be no other means of rescuing
them, the Hungarian Aero club has
been approached, and is looking for
an aeroplanlst to volunteer. His
task will be extremely difficult,
most of the Island has been flooded
and Is covered with broken ice.

Rattlers to Be Raised.
Ienox, Mass., March 13. One hun
dred rattlesnakes from the Schagti
coke Hills In Connecticut are to be
brought here by a syndicate of Con
necticut farmers to start a 12-acre
rattlesnake farm, land for which has
been purchased. Rattlesnake oil Is
worth $5 a pint, and there is also a
good return in the skins.
The farmers expect to have at
least 6000 rattlers within the next
few months.

cantaloupe crop of the Imperial Val
ley will break all records, according
to estimates that have been made
here.
At the time of compilation, the
yield of melons was expected to be
50.000,000 and It was estimated that
