Of the last 23 deaths in Lane coun REDUCTION OF 20 PER CENT ty only three were women, and In October there were 14 deaths, all men. PAGE SIX - l . : PROBABLE. t Simultaneously with the Issuance of an order by the Washington rall .road commission calling Into exist ence a new distance tariff for that state, and an order by the Inter-state commerce commission applicable to both that state an Oregon, the rail road commission for Oregon will about the middle of next month Issue a new distance tariff which will re duce the present rate from 15 to 20 per cent. The railroad commission for this state has been working on such a tariff for some time, and the above announcement was raade by Railroad Commissioner Campbell today when questioned in relation to the sub ject. The . railroad commission of Washington has been working on a similar tariff and while the commis sion for this state vould be ready to make its order sooner, It desires to wait until the Washington commis sion is ready as tr- railroads to be effected are so interlaced that this will operate beneficially for both states. In addition to that the or ders of the two state commissions will only extend o the boundary linos of the states and an order Is necessary from the Inter-state Com merce Commission to carry the plan Into effect For a year or more the commis sion of this state has contemplated such a move. The granting of re duced distributive rates for the coast cities by the Inter-state commerce commission has mwle It feasible and the rate will be used as a basis by the commission In fixing the rates for the new dlstanea tariff. At the present rates are out of proportion to the distributive rates. !The commission began Us investiga tion several months ago and a final hearing was set for December 18. The railroad companies, however, asked for an extension of 10 days in which to complete their briefs and It has been granted them. That will bring the final hearing along the first part of next month. The Wash ington commission is experiencing some trouble and Is delayed In Its work, and this wll' nrobably delay the Issuance of th order making the reducton until along the middle of next month. It will effect every railroad In the state, and will make a sweeping re duction. o SAY WALLA WALLA RIVER POLLUTED BY SEWAGE Discovering that sewage put Into the Walla Walla river by the city of Walla .Walla is polluting the stream to the extent that It is Injuring ranchers in Oregon, the state board of health at a meeting held this af ternoon at the state house directed the secretary to notify the city au thorities to take measures to abate the nuisance. Thorburn Ross, convicted for embezzlement In connection with the defunct Title, Guarantee & Trust company, of Portland, is In carcerated In the state prison, the Oregon Teachers' Monthly of this month has an extensive article on him In connection with Governor West's prison reform policy. The article after declaring that the governor's policy has been made the subject of much criticism pro ceeds to say that this criticism was renewed lately when Governor West peqnltted1 Ross to go to Portland and confer with District Attorney Cameron, of Multnomah county. Private Secretary Watson has issued a statement in which he corrects the errorf by saying that it was W. Cooper Morris who went to confer with the district attorney, and that Ross is no yet a prisoner In the penitentiary. o A J)readfnl Wonnd from a knifl, gun, tin can, rusty nail, fireworks, or of any other nature, de mands prompt treatment with Buck len's Arnica Salve to prevent blood poison or gangrene. OSLER RIGHT YOUTH ALWAYS SUCCEEDS AGE ma old idea of using sage fori aarnemng tne hair is again coming In vogue. Our grandmothers used to have dark, glossy hair at the age of 75, while our mothers have white hair before they are 50. Our grand mothers used to make a "sage tea" and applied It to their hair. The tea made their hair soft and glossy, and gradually restored the natural color. One objection to using such a preparation was the trouble of mak ing it, especially as it had to be made every two or three days, on account of souriag quickly. This objection has been overcome, and by asking al most any first-class druggist for Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Hair Rem edy the pnbllo can get a superior preparation of sage, with the ad mixture of sulphur, another valuable remedy for, hair and scalp troubles. Dally use of this preparation will not only quickly restore the color of the hair, but will also stop the hair from falling out and make It grow. Get a bottle from your druggist today. Use it and see for yourself how quickly dandruff goes, and gray hairs vanish. , . . . This preparation Is offered to the public at 60 .cents a bottle, and Is recommended and sold by all drug gists. Special Agent, J. C. Perry, The world Is always saying, "Come Here's Mother and- to it "The kind that Mother used to Make" Modern mothers and wise-acre cooks use Cottolene, instead of butter or lard, for frying and shortening. The reason is plain as the nose on your face. i Cottolene is a vegetable product, made from purest, refined cotton oil. It contains no hog fat or impurities, is made in a care ful, cleanly manner, never sold in bulk, its purity and freshness are absolutely guaran teed, and it makes food which is free from grease and indigestion. Imitations of Cottolene are thicker than blackberries in season, so be sure to ask for and take only Cottolene, the original pure, food shortening. It is economical because it goes one-third farther.
