' '.' ' V a ILLIHEE CLUB BUYING PROPERTY. uy The members of the Illihee club are subscribing stock to the Elk' builaing, which they occupy. All the members are taking from one to ten shares of stock to acquire ownership of the property. They will then have an income-producing home of their own, and in a few years it will be all paid for. That will make it possible to merge the publicity work of the Board of Trade with the Illihee club. It will make it possible to have a place to welcome guests of the city in a becoming manner. ' j . The entertainment and showing of proper hospitality to per sons who are visitors here and to the legislature are matters of great importance to the Capital City. This stock should all be subscibed this week, and the deal closed, so that the Elks may go ahead and make their arrange ments for a fine new building. The order of Elks has grown to have five hundred members, and, with a national convention coming to Oregon, must make its. own plans for entertaining its members from abroad. The .whole situation is working out right for a greater Salem. o The Salem Humane Society deserves support of all intelligent and Christian people, who believe there are laws for the protec tion of dumb animals, and that they should be enforced. Many of us are too much given to doing a little something for their own comfort, and are indifferent to the sufferings of those who can not speak for themselves. Become a member of the Salem Hu mane Society by paying a dollar. ' i : o : j . ; EDITOR AND MINISTER EXCHANGE. The exchange of the local editor and the revivalist was prob ably enjoyed by both hearers and readers. I For the first time in many years people were heard to admit publicly that they had actually read the editorials. The revivalist went so far as to actually say something in a positive way, and even took sides on a few matters, ! The editor is probably o be given credit for1 being more ad vanced as a thinker than the preacher once, anyhow. j He had the intelligence to arrive at the conclusion some time ago that he was not a fit person to exhort people. He deserves credit for quitting the pulpit game, and going to work to earn an honest living by actual labor. The most original and newsy items the revivalist got into his edition of the Statesman were his quotations from the Bible. They were news to most of the readers, and, whle not sound ing famil ar to some of us, were really ancient history. The Capital Journal thinks the exchange was a good thing for both, as it took them out of the rut for the time being. Strictly confidential, and not as a reflection on either, The Capital Journal would not let either one of the gentlemen take charge of its columns. It has too much regard for the interests and welfare of the community to trifle with so serious a matter as the pulpit or j the press. The sales of about five hundre'd copies of The Capital Journal on the streets every evening by the busy, noisy newsboys may not interest you from the standpoint of the publisher, but as an evidence of the growth of the city, and taking on metropolitan proportions, it cannot but be a source of satisfaction. The Cap ital Journal desires to be a newspaper. It does not wish to be a public scold, but it does wish to voice the interests of the com mon run of citizens, not of any select circle, or favored or pre ferred class. That it expresses these views was proven by the recent city election, when three amendments advocated byiThe Capital Journal were added to the city charter, and all others defeated. . THE OREGONIAN AND THE UNIVERSITY. The Oregonian had a terrible indictment of the State Univer sity in its editorials the other day. It amounted to this, that the iUniversity was not producing anything of any value to the state. , i That is a pretty serious charge when it is considered thai the taxpayers are digging up a quarter of a milion annually for it. We do not agree with all the conclusions of the Oregonian, but in the main its position is correct on all universities. Where are the literary men, the orators, the poets, the great leaders of thought and acton coming from? Geo. X. Wending, who put through the deal for the Eugene & Siuslaw ralroad, never saw even a high school. The worst thing about the university business is that people believe the general public is taxed for the benefit of a few. j The general public should be taxed to support public schools, and to train public school teachers, and no more. n t j M n 1 1 M I t L.
