Inusually high winds prevailing
along the coast yesterday prompted
the weather bureau to order out
storm warnings on all the Puget
Sound ports and at the mouth of the
Columbia river. The rainfall was
light in ail places, but the wind blew
with tremendous force all day. The
highest maximum velocity of wind
was registered at Tatoosh Island,
where the gale blew at a rate of 68
miles, from the south. At Blaine the
wind was blowing at an estimated
velocity of 60 miles an hour at 5
o'clock yesterday afternoon. Wea
ther forecasts announce a continu
ance of the wind storm today along
the northwest coast, with rain. The
storm appears to be confined tothe
west coast, no unusual weather con

HIT THE HOUSE BURNED
Her twin babies, which were Bleep
ing In the cradle, were all that Mrs.
S. Stevens could save from the flames,
when the farm residence, near Eu
gene, which the family was occupy
ing, burned yesterday. The mother
was working in the kitchen and. the
babies were In a room at the oppo

timation of fire she had was when
she smelled smoke, and .when she
rushed into the room where the chil
dren were, she found it already full
of smoke and name. She was almost
asphyxiated in carrying the children
out.
Mr. Stevens was In Eugene and on
hearing of the fire he raced In an au
tomobile to the scene, but was too
late to save anything from the flames.
The building, which was owned by J.
.A Wetzel, of Eugene, was valued at
$:1000. Mr. and Mrs. Stevens lost all
their furniture and $40 In gold.

Miss Nellie S. Starr and Miss Mtnn'e

6753 names on the Parkinson peti

131 were classified as 'suspected"
and 131 as bad, or forgeries.
On cross-examination the women
said that they had eliminated whole
petitions being circulated by Joseph
Gorham, Harry Goldman, Robert
Goldman, Charles Falk, Fred Koch,
Harry Coler and W. H. Reynolds.
The reason for this action, they tes
tified, was that they became satisfied
that all or nearly all of the names
were fraudulent, the steady stream of
the handwriting of only four or five
persons making them feel that prob
ably whole petitions were forged.
These were not taken Into consider

We are so positive that we can re
lieve constipation, no matter how

We think that It Is worse than use
less to attempt to cure constipation
with cathartic drugs. Cathartics
may do much harm. They may
weaken the bowels, and make con

Constipation is often accompanied
and may be caused by weakness of

you must therefore tone up and
strengthen those parts and restore
them to healthier activity.

brouglit In a resolution to 'have the
matter of Improving the olty jail
postponed until the first of the year.
Such a riillatory measure 'wag stren

ruled the resolution out of order, and
also said that this committee had
been Instructed to go ahead with the
work of Improvement. He stated that
it the building committee Is not will

work was done at once, that he
would give it to some one who was.
The matter ot purchasing another
team was brought up by Councilman
Lafky, who recommended that a fine
young team that he had in mind be
purchased for the Bum of $350. The
team is needed to work on the lirrv
sweeper that the city Is thinking of
purchasing. In case It Is possible to
run the present sweeper 18 hours a
day the contemplated purchase of
the additional sweeper may be in
