The year 1911 is surely going to
bo Oregon's greatest year la all re
spects. Most people are just begin'
nlng to realize that the vast devel
opment, the Immigration and all
phases of activity are the greatest ev
er experienced or anticipated by the
Oregon people. The statement re
cently made by Theo. B. Wilcox con
cerning the crop prospects, the excel
lency of the money market and the
great amount of railroad building to
be done, is almost startling to many
readers, and Oregon's people are be
ginning to awaken to a realization of
the great things in store for them.
Salem certainly has occasion to be
gratified over existing coalitions.
We have the greatest grain and hay
crop In Bight for many years. Fruit
of all kinds is above the average. The
prospect is that our vast hop crop
will be sold at from 20 to 30 cents
per pound, and that means that the
Income from within a radius of 15
miles about Salem will amount to
12,500,000. Prunes are being con.
tracted at figures that will range
from 5 to 7 cents per pound, to say
nothing of the prices that will be re
ceived for those shipped fresh. Salem
will handle Jl.000,000 worth of
prunes. The potato crop of Marlon
county ia something enormous, and
the prospect is that good prices will
prevail for all kinds of produce.
These various crops will give Salem
prosperity, If everything else should
fail to materialize.
The real estate market was never
the Steeves corner at $55,000. Just
the other day Geo. E. Waters and Joe
Artnlnh hnueht the Hirschberg cor
ner for $28,000. Buyers are hunting
foi; opportunities to get noia or ousi
ness property In. Salem, and there Is
practically nothing on the market.
Tn thd building line, it is needless
to refer to the hundreds of residences
going up: this growth is seir-evuieni.
In addition Salem has four
large public buildings assured, one Is
the new state library and supreme
court building, for which the legisa
ture appropriated $150,000. Ground
will be broken for a six-story Mason
ic temple within 60 days. Plans are
about perfected on the $40,000 ar
mory, and the new $30,000 Carnegie
library will be started as soon as the
eronnda are cleared. There is not a
vacant business building in the city.
Parties stand ready to build as soon
as desirable sites can be procured.
More public improvements are being
made than ever before In the history
of the city. In fact, Oregon's capital
city is being rapidly transformed, and
one needs to be away but a Bhort time
to notice the vast changes going on.

O. E. Cole and wife, of Bisoee,
Arizona, arrived in town last Thurs
day, and by Friday noon they had
purchased 20 acres of young prune
orchard in the Waldo Hills, with
out buildings, for $4000. They left
fnr home on the Shasta limited Fri
day night to close up their affairs and
hecome residents of Marion county.
C. Brlmson. of Vtica, New York,
was in town last week and took an

since notified the owner that he will
take the place.

wick, Pa., has just bought a 20-acre

A. Frederick, of Canada, last week
paid $3600 for a two-acre home in
South Salem.
Mr. Brown, near Independence,

Mr. Stanberry, of Alberta, has pur
chased 20 acres of Eoff and Downing,
five miles east of town, and Is de
veloping It for a model orchard.
Hagermanh Bros, recently came
from Wisconsin and Invested $9000
in a 30-acre apple orchard near the
Kaiser school.
A. J. Linderen. of Roseburg, has
lust closed a deal for a 240-acre
ranch In Polk county.
E. Craig of Pendleton, has pur
chased the J. Barber ranch of 238
acres near Oak Grove, for $16,000
B. E. Combs, of Caldwell, Idaho,
has Durchased 220 acres of R. L
Thomas, southeast of, Salem, for
$10,000.
Edw. Dougherty, of Oklahoma,
paid $12,000 for the A. B. Ray ranch
of 320 acres. .
J. J. Turner has just sold his 46
acres in Polk county to B. E. Carrier,
of Hood River, for $10,000, and Mr.
Turner has now bought six acres at
