HEROINE
OF WRECK
DIED TODAY
UNITED TRESS LEASED WIRE.
Victoria, B. C, June 6. Mrs. Min
nie Patterson, the heorine of the Val
encia .disaster and Coloma wreck,
died at Albernl Sunday. She made a
memorable Journey on December 8,,
1906, over five miles of most difficult
trail, in a heavy storm to send the
government steamer Quadra from
Bamfleld after the storm had pros
trated telegraph wires, to rescue Cap
tain Allison and nine others who had i all offenders
POLICE FORCE
IS TO HAVE A
MOTORCYCLE
IT WILL BE VSED IX CAPTURING
VIOLATORS OP THE SPEED OR.
DIXAXCE, PERHAPS, ANYWAY
IT CAN BE VSED FOR THAT
PURPOSE.
When the world was young and
the common law held supreme reign
there was a maxim which forbade an
officer from shooting an offender of
the law when he had committed an
offense less than felony, command
ing him, Instead, to overtake and
capture him, the law presuming in
such cases the officer to be equally
as fleet-footed as the escaping vio
lator. Now the law of today s,till forbids
an officer shooting an offender when
the crime committed !s less than a
felony, but in this day and age of
the Oregon system and automobiles
and aeroplanes, the presumption as
to the fleetness of an officer no long
er prevails, as is evidenced by the
passage last evening by Salem's pro
gressive and enterprising council of
a resolution directing the police com
mittee to purchase a motor-cycle for
the benefit of the police force.
Automobiles Too Fast.
The reason advanced for the pur
chase of the motor-cycle is that the
police force are unable to apprehend
automobilists who may violate the
speed ordinances. Whenever local
parties are involved the officer can
take the number of the machine and
arrest them at their leisure, but when
it comes to visiting automobollsts
speeding out of the city at a rate ex
ceeding the specified rate In the
speed ordinance, the number is of
little value, as probably they will not
visit the city again for months or for
years, and it is neoessary. to appre
hend them at the time of the offense.
With a motor-cycle ready to be
pressed into service, the police be
lieve they will be able to apprehend

SELLS CIRCUS JUNE 8.
To those who may linger on the
circus grounds when the parade of
The Great Sells-Floto Shows return
to the tents, It may appear that the
massive cages and dens of animals
are placed indiscriminately In the
menagerie tent, but this is not the
case.
, :It Is necessary for the! peace of the
animal families that the arrangement
be the same day after day. . If the
Man cage originally is first, the mon
key cage., next, the- polar bear next,
the -seals next, 'the hippopotamus
ndxtj the ocelot next, the' tigers next
and so on down one, side of the mam
moth menagerie tent and back on the
Other one day, the same arrangement
is necessary after that
The ends of the cages are closed,
so that the animals cannot see their
neighbors, but thev can. smell them.
Any change 'of .order among the dens
will promtply start something in the
zoo.
When the Sells-Floto Shows exhib
it here, the circus patron can obtain
much interesting information by
closely observing the menagerie.
