The Globe, Canada's chief government organ, discussing the proposed reciprocity treaty with the I'nlted States, today says: "The proposed agreement is dis tinctly popular In Canada. If the cry of the American people for a wider source for a food supply is genuine, It will be equally popular In the l!nited States. "Whether congress ratifies the agreement or not, it will stand as a convincing proof of the desire of both governments to end tariff wars and bring about mor) neighborly consid eration. Friendship and fair dealing Is far better than strife and suspicion. "Ministers Fielding and Patterson have shown that the good relations with the United States are consistent with unswerving ' loyalty to Canada. The British preferential tariff la the keynote of Canada'3 fiscal policy." o Knglewood Items, Mr. Jacob RIs Is building a fine 8-room residence on 19th street, be tween Kansas and Nebraska avenues. Business on the Gairden Road car line seems to be picking up some lntely, at least the management pur chased a new trolley rope and put in a new light, and, 1f things keep on brightening up It wouldn't surprise us If they put on a conductor inside of a year. Steamboat business along 17lh street has been on the decrease for the past week or two, owing to the overflow of tho canal near Lansing's rapids, which makes It rough sailing. There has been talk of there being loc ks put In tho rjver similar to those on the Columbia, provided It does not Interfere with the Portland Light & Power Company's rights, when they repair their roadbed. When will that be. Jake?
