Markhara, of Pittsburg, was today elected president of the Illinois Cen tral railroad, as the successor of 'James T. Harahan. Markham, in 1897, was made general freight agent of the Oregon lines of the Southern Pacific rall 'road. In 1901 he was transferred to San Francisco as-Assistant freight trafllc agent and In 1904 was mada vice president of the .Houston and Texas Central, .another ' Harrlmni road. In April, 1904, Markham be came general manager of the Sou thern Pacific system and In June, .1904, he became vice president of the company. In 1904, Markham left the South ern Pacific to become general mana ger of the Guffey Petroleum com pany at Beaumont, Texas. The elimination of Harahan from the Illinois Central is caused by operation of the pension rules of the company. Harahan will be 70 years old on January - 12 next He has been with the road continuously for 20 years. He was chosen head of the Illinois Central system after a spectacular flght In which Edward H. Most of tho ses sion was taken up with a discussion of the Moon bill (or a revision of laws relating to the Judiciary. Taft's special message recommend ed the adoption of a law authorising the president and the stats of Texas officials to' mark the boundary be tween Texas and -New Mexico, The messagd was read and Its considera tion suggested, but tho speaker ob jected. ' The senate adjourned at 2 o'clock. It will reconvene January G.
