DAILY CAPITAL JOURNAL, SALEM, OREGON, "WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1010 PAGE BE&8$ CUSTOM OFFICER SEIZES TRUNKS San. Francisco, Feb. 2. Although tho amount of dutiable articles not declared by passengers of the Ham-"burg-American Liner Cleveland Is less than that usually found aboard other steamers arriving here, local customs Inspectors today are In pos session of several thousand dollars worth of seized imports. Tho great majority of passengers aboard tho Cleveland declared every dutiable article. There were few exceptions, however, and these ex ceptions caused considerable trouble for the Inspectors. Thirteen trunks belonging to Mrs. Edward V. Price, wife of a Chicago millionaire, are at the custom1? "house here following a perfunctory examination yesterday of two of tho trunks. In two of thom nearly 2,000 worth of dutiable goods Is said to have been recovered and It is expected that recoveries will be made. Mrs. Price says that she told her maid to declare tho articles but that tho girl failed to do so. At first Mrs. Price was Indignant,, but she became tearful as tho inspectors pawed through dainty laces and clothing. Tho wires were kept hot with ap peals to influential friends but these apparontly failed of effect and the customs officers continued their in vestigations today. . o MANSFIELD CASE IN SUPREME COURT Argument was made in the case of Hattio Mansfield against J. WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY $ By Charles McKnight $ A highly entertaining program was given by tho pupils of the College of Oratory in the university chapel last evening. Tho room was crowded to Its full capacity, standing room being at a premium. The numbers were well rendered, arid showed tal ent In the ones participating. Miss Thomas showed ability in handling child dialect, and, with training, should make a good impersonator. Mr. McNees related some touching scenes, whllo Miss Judd gave tho au dience a chance to laugh when tell ing of tho old farmer and the bicycle man. Mr. Oliver told of a device that might causo him to lose his job (he Is a preacher) if It were adopted. Stirring scenes were portrayed by Miss Thompson, ana hold one in sus pense, but the suspense wns relieved by Perry Reigleman as ho related tho experiences of a Frenchman in New York. Miss Gross then carried tho audience back to the scenes In the days of Nero, which she did with ability. Tho closing number was a sketch by Miss Rees and Mr. Schmidt and as a side-splitting number was a good ono with which to close. The musical numbers were well rendered, and added greatly to the success of the program. Song, "Barque of Dreams," Ham ilton Gray, Miss Helen Smith. Violin obllgato by Miss Georgia Starr. This was a closely con tested game, and the most exciting of tho inter-department series. Tho score stood 13 to 10 in favor of the Preps at the end of the first half. It was anybody's game up till tho very last and tho excitement ran high, the friends of each team cheering with all their might. One side would be ahead and then the other, with never more than four points in tho lead. The playing of the Preps was clearly a surprise, no one expected them to hold their opponents to such a close score. They showed great Improve ment, and among them aro playbrs who will make a record for them selves if they remain in school till they finish tho college course. Tho Medics have a strong team composed of old experienced players and should land the championship if they would ihllc!iren Cry FOR FLETCHER'S O A STO R I A Lands I practice a littlo and get Into condi tion.
