Flint today Is recover Ing from the experiences of a har rowing six hours, when he was lost in a deep canyon of San Clemente Island, according to news that ha just reached tho mainland. Flint, with Chief Forester Gilford Pinchot, Steward Edward White, of Santa Barbara, and C. F Holder, had been fishing at San Clemente, which lies 35 miles at sea, for the last week. Monday, according to tho re port that reached here today, the party started to explore the Indian mounds that He In the interior ot the Island. On the return Flint saw what he thought would be a short cut to the camp. He journeyed down a narrow gorge for more than halt an hour only to find it end abruptly at the foot of a huge faco of granite. When he attempted to retrace his steps he lost his way. After wandering lor hours and shouting vainly for help, the sena tor was about to give up and look for a sheltered spot to spend tho night, when ho caught the shimmer of tho ocean through a narrow stdo canyon that entered the gorge, He hurried to tho beach, which was moroly a narrow strip of sandy shelf, protected on all sides by Impassible bluffs. About dusk tbo prisoner sighted a fishing boat sovernl hundred yards off shore, and by shouting and wav ing his coat attracted tho attention of its skipper.
