GREAT PARK CAMPAIGN
FOR REST OF THE WEEK
There Is a big park boosting program on for the rest of
the week, A large ladies committee has been formed and
Saturday will be tag day, when scores of little girls and big
girls wlO pin badges on tho voters to remind them of their
duty on Monday, In a number of the churches there will
be reference made to the value of parks from a moral, stand
Mbolotr ,'An executive committee of the ladies of South Salem
has' been formed, composed of Mrs, H, S, Polsal, Mrs, A,
Vass and Mrs, G, F, Quaintance, who will enlist ladles all
over the city, This afternoon at 2 o'clock the ladles namecf
met all the young ladies and little girls who will work for
a park at tho Board of Trade rooms,
BIG SUNDAY MEETING.
The Salem Miliatry band has been engaged for a concert
Sunday afternoon, when some of the most prominent citizens
will make addresses In advocacy of the park on Fairmount
Heights, Miss Magers is arranging a chorus for that occa
sion, There will be the largest demonstration on the site of
the proposed park ever seen in the 'city, There will be spe
cial streot car service required to carry the crowds,

Fairmount Park will include the grove of big trees which is used for popular picnic grounds by the churches' Sunday
schools, lodges and societies. The total acreage is between thirty and forty, and with the big concrete reservoir ot in
water company that will be acquired by .the city when mountain water is brought -to the Capital City, will make one
of the finest public pleasure grounds in the state.
BUY A PARK WHILE LAND IS CHEAP.
On Monday, August 2nd, this city will hold a special e ection to issue $65,000 of refunding bonds to take the
place of some city bonds-that mature at that time. At the same time will be -submitted the question whether this citv
shall acquire a tract of land known as Fairmount Hill, of a'.out thirty acres, for the purpose of making that beautiful
wooded height a public park.
The option of the citv at present prices expires on Aujust 3d, and that magnificent grove of noble firs will be
doomed to destruqtoin as sure as we let this opportunity pass to acquire that land for a park.
There is not another similar natural park site left as c ose into the city as Fairmount Park will be The land con
sists of four blocks offered the city by Rev. H. B. Elworthy (48 lots) and three blocks by J. M. Brown of Silvertonf36
lots) at the nominal price of about $200 per lot, or $17,000 for the whole trapt, including fourteen acres owned bv El
worthy on the hillside, which carries the park site down to the county road on the west.
Not counting the 14 acres not plotted, the lots offered the city are all of them worth from $250 to $300 each
and are actua ry selling for those prices. This property for park purposes cannot again be secured for this price at anv
time in he future. The reservoir site of a bock and a half is comnletely surrounded by a tier of blocks that are no v
offered the city, and when h. water plant becomes city property that reservoir, costing as much as the city will iav
for the whole park, will be the center of the park. ' y
