Napavlne, at tho foot of the Cascade
mountain?. A wave of excitement
and apprehension passed over tho
cars and passengers, and views of a
hold-up filled tho minds of those on
board the motionless train.
Conductor Youngs stormed through
the coaches to find out what was
wrong. Engineer Payno declared
that threo sharp peremptory pulls of
tho bell rope bad been felt In tho
cab.
While nervous passengers peered
into tL mysterious blackness of tho
forest depths for sign of raiding ban
dit, tho express messenger leaped
from hi car and explained tho caiuso
of the sudden stoppage.
