Mystery surrounds tho origin of tho flro but It Is supposed to havo started from defectivo wiring In tho walls between tho establishments. Jit was discovered by J. W. McFarland, tho Janitor of tho Frakos place Hearing a crackling In tho rear of tho store he discovered n wall of flame. Ho hurriedly sent In an alarm and tho denartment promptly responded. When tho department nrrlvod Battalion Chief Young took In tho situation at a glanco and seeing all tho fine laces, millinery and silks, holds tho hoso mon out with tho remark, "Boys, you've got to get this flro out if you havo to oat It, but no water." Tnen Captain Hawkins of Chemical No. 1 turned In and made a gallant fight with chemicals and .paved great loss by keeping tho water out of tho place. Au It was, tho loss was heavy. Flno silks, satins, laces, gowns, linens, suiting, etc., which wore not touched by tho fire, wero absolutely ruined by chemicals, smoke, soot and stains. Tho handsome beauty parlors In tho rear of tho building which havo Just been fitted up by Mrs. Frnkcs at considerable expense, woro almost ruined by the dense smoke. Hero It was necessary to turn In a wnter hoso to fight tho fire which had gained headway between tho flooring and walls. Mrs. Frakos wns called by tho Janitor from her homo at Seventeenth and Morrison strcots and sho camo down to sco her placo being de molished by tho flames. Sho felt especially bad about It as thero had been nnothor bad flro last October and sho had -Just had tho placo re stocked, refitted and romodolcd. Sho stnteu that slio has a stock cost ing from 3G,000 to 140,000 but snys tho ontlre loss will bo covered by Insurance. Whether tho flro started In ono or tho other stores or in tho wall betweon thorn Is unknown and will bo a hard matter to dotcrmlno. S. h. N. Oilman, tho proprietor of tho auction house, estlmntes his loss as nearly $1000. While our Portland store has been closed the past two weeks on ac count of fire, thousands of dollars' worth of merchandise has been pil ing up at the express offices, and as we have made arrangements with Mr. Burke to dispose of our Portland stock, we are compelled to ship all these new goods to the Salem store.
