Frakes mllllnory establishment, 409 Washington street, shortly after 2:30 this morning and causod approx imately 18500 to $10,000 damage, fully covered by insurance It also oxtended Into tho roar of Oilman's auction house, 411 Washington street, und thore causod dainago to about $1000. Mystery surrounds tho origin of tho flro but It Is supposed to havo started from dofcctlvo wiring in tho walls between tho establishments. It was discovered by J. W. McFarland, tho Janitor of tho Frakes place. Hoarlng a crackling In the roar of the storo ho discovered a wnll of flam. Ho hurriedly sent in nn alarm and tho dopartmont promptly responded. When tho dopartmont nrrlved Dnttallon Chief Young took In tho situation at a glanco and soelng all tho flno laces, mllllnory and silks, hold tho hoso men out with tho roninrk, "Boys, you'vo got to got this flro out If you havo to cat it, but no water." Thon Captain Hawkins of Chemical No. 1 turnod In and mado a gallant tight with chemicals and saved groat loss by keeping tho wator but of tho place. As it was, tho loss was heavy. Flno silks, satins, laces, gowns, llnons, suiting, etc., which woro not touched by tho flro, woro nbsolutoly ruiuod by chomlcnls, smoko, soot nnd stains. Tho hnndsoi.iu boaiuy parlors In tho roar of tho building which havo just been fitted up by Mrs. Frakes nt considerable oxponso, woro almost ruined by tho donso smoko. Thoro was also some damago by wutcr, as aftor tho flro had ap parently been extinguished, it broko out again In tho walls higher up and caused damago to tho exponslvo stock of hats on tho second floor. Hero It was necossary to turn In a wator hoso to fight tho flro which had gained hoadway botwoon tho flooring and walls. Mrs. Frakes was called by tho janitor from hor homo at Seventeenth and Morrison etrcots nnd sho camo down to seo hor placo being de molished by tho flames. Sho folt especially bad about It as thoro had boon anothor bad tiro last Octobor and sho nnd just had tho placo ro stocrfed, rofittod nnd romodclcd. Sho states that sho has a stock cost ing from $35,000 to $40,000, but says tho entlro loss will bo covered by Insurance. . ' Whether tho flro started in ono or tho other stores or In the wall botwoon thorn Is unknown and will bo n hnrd matter to detormlno. S. L. N. Qllmnn, tho proprietor of tho miction house, estlmntos his loss as nearly $1000.
