Carnotlte, a mineral recently found
in Colorado, is a source of the rare
elements uranium nnd vanadium and
hai yielded traces of the still rarer
element radium.
These deposits, which also contain
other rare minerals ,aro situated at
the -foot of Blue Mountain, formerly
known as Ynmpa Plateau, and aro
similar to those on Conl Creek, Rio
Blanco county, Colo. Tho ores pre
sent a beautiful display of colors.
Tho carnotlte, which constitutes u
relatively small percentage of the
minerals found, occurs in tho form
of, a film or 'thin cruBt of powdery
material of bright canary-yellow
color.
A yellow mineral which closely re
sembles carnotlte In color and ap
pearance, and which occurs In even
greater amount, proved, on testing
by exports of the Geological Survey,
to. be a vanadate of copper. Chemi
cal 'tests of the ores havo ghown tho
presence In them of ncopper sel
enTto, which Is believed '.to bo the
first selenlte discovered in the United
States.
