Tho National Model License league has Issued n brief statement showing the relatlonihlp of prohibition to poli tics and labor, as Illustrated by the recen utterances of men who aro most prominent today in the public eye. The league publishes a com munication from William Jennings Bryan to the effect that the liquor question Is not a national Issue, but that the only tlmo that Mr. Bryan ever had occasion to vote on the question of state-wldo prohibition, , ho voted against It and expressed Milmeelf as follows; "I believe Injthe right of each community to attend to' 'its' 'own business. I believe that tho people I 01 ine commuuHy Know uciicr wuni they want dono than any outside peT sons can know." The league also quotes tho recent utterance of Henry Wnterson, od Itor of tho Courier-Journal, who ha laid down tho rule: "No Democrat enn be a prohibitionist." Tuft's View of Prohibition. The league then calls attention to tho fact that the prohibitionist can find 6olace In the utterance of tho Republican nominee for tho presi dency of the United States, William Howard Toft, who, In a lecture de livered at Yale on "Four Aspects of Civic Duty," nld: "Nothing Is more foolish, nothing more utterly at variance with soun 1 policy than to enact a law which, by reason of conditions surrounding tho community In which It Is do clared to he law, is Incapable of en forcement. Such nn Instance. Is sometimes presented by sumptuary lawB by which the sale of intoxicat ing liquors Is prohibited under pen nlty In localities where tho public sentiment of tho Immediate com munity does not nnd will not Bus tain tho enforcement of tho law. In cases where the sale of liquor cannot bo prohibited In fact, It Is far bettor to regulate nnd dn mlnlsh the evil thnn to nttompt to Btamp It out." Whnt Mitchell Soya. In regard to tho position of lnbor as to sumptuary law, the league quotes from n letter received by President GUmoro from John Mitch ell, president of the United Mine Workers of America and 2nd vice president of the American Federa tion. of Labor, in which Mr. 'Mitchell says that ho regard model llcenso as much superior to the present sys tem and that It would remove many existing evil. Backing this up Is the following quotation from an of ficial statement of tho American Federation of Laber: "Tho continued growth of prohi bition and tho destruction of the brewing nnd distilling interests will result In the farmer and tho allloa trades in nil the lines of manufac ture being mads to suffer great losses by destroying tho market for their product?." The prohibitionist's views as to tho Democratic party, as given in the American Prohibition Yoar Book for 1908, aro quoted as fol fel fol eows: "This (tho Democratic) party does not employ 'deep thought on. its attitude on the liquor question. It has a few sounding phrnsci on 'sumptuary law' and SHOE SALE CONTINUED ONE MORE WEEK Vi A IX shoes will be sold at the same ridiculously low prices, with ad ditional cuts in some lines, until Sat urday night, July 25th. . Short List of Opponent. In another section quoted from tho Year Book tho prohibltlonlstd say: "Quotations are at hand taking an attitude unfavorable to tho Fpread of prohibition from Presi dent Harrison, Jnmes G. They do not stop to question whether the liquor mon's arguments and figures are sound and true but thoy swallow thorn whole, and act accordingly.". Republlcmi Attitude, As the Republican party's attitude toward prohibition, the Year Book is quoted as follews: "Tho Republican leader have en deavored to postpone and finally to defeat prohibition oftener thnn thev have consented to It. Tho party cannot by any moans be said to have been a militant force in be half of the prohibition of the liquor traffic and the protection of th homes of the people from tho drlntc curse." The league's quotation of the Year Book's attack on President Roosevelt is as. follews: "He (Mr, Roosevelt) reads the press and often flames out In an swer to newspapers or persons who An tint Tilpflse h!m. Hut he Anon not I know tint the liquor traWc exists, In conclusion, tho league point out the fact that tho prohibitions U turned away from the Democratic party; from the Republican party; on 'the Poor- that ho cannot get the laboring man's sympathy; and In default of theso, ho must once more mako h'rasolf ridiculous by throwlni; away his vote for a foolish candi date and a futile cause.
