Several members of tho advertis
ing committer told of the splendid
work that is being done in thnt lino.
Mr. Park sr.1.1 that The Dalles was a
rival for tho honoru thnt belong to
Salem, and thnt the people thoro
wore advertising themselves as a
Cherry City. "Tho Dalle?," ho said,
"Ip trying very hard to get tho nnmo
of 'Cherry City' from Salem. All the
cities of Orogon aro having fairs of
some opecinl sort. Hood River .has
strawberries and apples. Albany Is
to hnve an apple fair. The Dalles
wants cherries. But wo nro tho
'Cherry City.' Let us push the fair,
and keep the nnmo that belongs to
us to ourselves."
In regard to advertising tho Su
lorn Cherry Fair, qhnirman Powers
said: "Practically everyone of the 27
horticultural papers west of tho
Rocky mountains nro mentioning tho
Snlem cherry fair In every Issue.
There Is not a horticultural paper of
any Importance in tho whole United
States that has not mentioned it.
Every big fruit raiser In tho country
Is talking of It. Mr. Stark, tho larg
est nurseryman wrst of tho Missis
sippi river, is coming to Snlem to sea
It. His son, who Is now nt Stanford
university Is going to settle on tho
const, and going into tho fruit rais
ing business, nnd we are going to
try to get him' to locato at Salem
when he comes here."
Chairman Powers told of the enor

ts lng matter thnt has' been sent out.
but mentioned the fnct that tho hor
tlciltural pap'ers were giving it spe
cial' editorial notice, which was bet
ter than pnld advertising.
A motion by R. C. Bishop was
carried, thqt $25Q that wa& set aside
for the Salem float at the Portland
Rose carnival, together with the
$250 now pn hand, be appropriated
for the qherry fair. '
The mattjr of the Fourth of July
colcbratfon was also taken up. It
has been definitely settled that Sa
lem. U to have a gigantic celebration
on the Fourth, and that It is not to
be connected with the cherry fair.
In spsaklng of the celebration,
Chairman Huckesteln of the Fourth
of July committee snld: "Unanimous
action was taken Init night by the
business nen's league to celebrate
tho Fourth at Salem. Messrs, R. C.
Bishop, Hal Patton and R, D. Yantls
were appointed a committee to ral?o
funds, and today they secured $1250.
Tho mark was set at 92000, but It
Is probable that we will not need
that amount. We are gojng to mako
a success of the celebration, and
when we are through with that w
will teu'n all our attention to the suc
cess of the cherry fair.
The Board of' Trade Is enthusiastic
