tho plan submitted and wo can got
help along tho whole length if we
ask for it."
Goo. Brewn: "I nm moro than
convinced that this Is tho only feasi
ble way to got it railroad. Thoro la
no troublo to raise tho capital and
sufficient to innko it go."
A. D. Gardner: "1 want to con
gratulate the Salem business men
who are bore with ub tonight on tho
fact that they and their town have
woke uji t.) the ft.cl. that wo linvo a
great and undeveloped country up
here. I am 3i.riilcd that thoy lmvo
n t woke up boforo. I bnvo no doubt
of tho success of thla enterprise.
The fuel supply of the capital city
Is fast molting nwny, and wo have nt
u low 03timate COO, 000 cords of fuel
wood on any oloctric lino that can
bo built up thla way. Stayton is
allvo and is growing rapidly aud our
people aro, after hearing .tho spirit
of you Salem mon, In a mood to Join
hands with you. Cltlzons all along
tho lino who own lands nnd timber
will holp build it, nnd moro than
make it back again on the improved
value of tholr lands. It will result
in cutting up our big (unimproved
fnrms, fill tho country with people.
Stayton Is tho biggest manufactur
ing town In tho worid for tho num
ber of pooplo. I am confident tho
rond will easily bo made self-sus
taining and after It Is built will soil
woll for cash."
J. T. Koarns spoko from tho
itandpolnt of a practical railroad
buldor of twolvo years' oxporlonco.
"Tho grading enn bo dono from Sa
'cm to Stayton at $1000 a mllo for
.Ho dirt work. It takes 2GG0 ties to
tho mllo and thoy can bo bought for
a grout Iobb now than a year ago. A
company could got chonper labor
and b rid go matorlnl now than for
lomo tlmo, or thnn It can got In the
'uturo. Snlom and Stnyton can
build this road, and Salem alono can
build it, but that is not nocesinry.
Help can be got on n squaro deal all
along the lino. Mnko It a standard
guago oloctric lino that you can haul
a regulation freight enr over. I have
scon a groat many railroads built I
and for a now lino I would rather
own this lino than any I over caw.
It Is oaBlor to build than nny lino I
know of in Orogon, nnd has a pay.
ing business ready for it the mlnuto
you huvo ton mllos of track down. '
Geo. Spnnlel: "It la tho only fondl
bio plan for this nock of tho woods
to got a railroad. I nm honrtily in
favor of It and will put in all I can.
Many of our peoplo having boon In
vesting in mining stock, but hero Is
something wo will nlwnys got tho ill
root benefit of, and it In right horo
at our own doors."
Chas. Streff: "I will iolp In this
plan and 'this onterprlso as much na
I can, I nm heartily In favor of the
propostlon. No outsido Intorost will
help us to got this road, but If we
all do all wo can, and all work to?
ogther wo can build tho road and It
will force other roads to como bore
It will always bo an outlet for our
manufactures 'that will give us com
petition in freight, and connect us
with tho marketo of the world."
Willis Caldwell: "Tho proposition
looln right to me. Why alt horo nnd
wnit for soino outsido power to
como and help us whan Salem offors
to oome to our rescue. Lot us ac
cept it and help push It along iu
good faith. Count mo in."
W. F. Clegger: "I will do all I can
to help mnko it go."
Ellis P. Lambert: "I am satisfied
It is tho best way to proceed."
J. W. Jacksen: "I am willing to
help build tho road, and it is the
first tlmo In my life that I havo
eer been willing to take stock in
a concern. But the way it has, been
put up is the boat proposition of the
kind that I have over listened to."
The plan submitted by the Salem
business men was then ondorsed by
an unanimous rising vote.
O. V. Meyor, who Is a property
owner, moved Hiat the plan sub
mitted by tho representatives of the
Salem cpmmoroial bodies bo ap
proved and endorsed by the unani
mous voto of the Commercial club
and bus!nos mon of Stayton. and
that they pledge their hearty co

Geo. Brown and Willis Caldwell
wero chosen by the Stayton Coramor
c'al club to represent tho business
men of that city on tho board of
truetcc3 for itho stockholders, and
with two mombors of tho Salem
Commercial bodies and ono county

thorn, will submit a plan to finance
tho ontorprlse. Many of tho Stayton
mon wero ready to subserlbo Btock
Saturday night but it was decided to
havo tho organization perfect and
get a moro definite basis for action.
Thoro was great enthusiasm
for two hours, and nil who expressed
themselves nt tho meeting and nftor
