Although It rained all day Satur
day and continued through the night
with a cold wind ndding to tho dis
ogreeableness of tho weather, tho
opera house was well filled with
"boosters" and their frelnds.
W. L. Preres, president of the Stay
ton Commercial Club, presided, and
first called on W. H. Downing, pres
ident of ho State Agricultural As
sociation. Mr. Downing stated that
seven miles of macadam road have
been built in Sublimity precinct this
year. He spoko strongly in favor of
good roads as n means of building
up our country.
P. Q. Dekabach, president of tho
Salem Board of Trade, spoke of tho
interest the peoplo of Salem havo In
an electric lino up this valley, and
snld thnt Salem would raise $10,000
for tho proposition if nocesary.
R. K. Page, manager of the Salem
branch of tho Portland Railway,
Light & Power Company, declared
ithat the country should be developed
In order to secure a railroad. Ho
spoko highly of Stayton's water
power.
A. F. Hofer, Bocrotary of tl)o Sa
lem Board of Trade, declared him
self " a bashful boy," but neverthe
less mndo a flno talk. Ho spoko of

lom by persistent effort, nnd sug
