EVANS LOSES HIS LIFE Drowned in Long Tom Thnrsday Whito Driving Logs. Elimlra, Or., Mar. 20. Thomas A. Evans, who lives eight mllos west of here, was drowned nenr that placo Thursday morning about 10 o'clock, while helping bring his drlvo of logs down to tho Elmira lumber mills. The accident occurred within a half mile of tho mill whllo breaking a jam. Uort Inmsn and Ross Huston woro about 50 ynrda above Evans around tho bGnd In tho creek. The Jam had been brokon and Evans was riding the Ipgs down while the other men had taken tho boat to pull In the looao logs from tho bank. They heard a splash but as the Aroes over- hung tho river, they thought it was a limb that had caught in tho flood. Then they heard a yell or what soemod liko a yell, and they halloed to Hans Rude who was about 76 yards below where Evans went in and he answered. Thoy asked if ho was all right and ho said yes. Thoy supposed It was Evnns and thoy went on with tho work of pulling tho logs In. A half hour lator thoy went down tho river to whoro Rudo was and asked whero Evans was. Tttido .replied that he had not soon htm, then it dawned on them that tho cry was from Evans and not Rudo, and senrch for his body was at once begun. Ross Huston ran to tho mill .to give tho alarm, a team with lumber to make n raft, and grap pling hooks wns dispatched to tho sccno and about 40 in on gatherod to hunt for tho body. Thoy found Evans' peavy whoro ho hnd falltn In and at 2.30 p. m, the body was re covered about 75 yards below where It wont In. Tho body wns takon to Uort Inmnn's ronidenco. It was found unnooossnry to hold an In quost ns tho fact of his drowning bolng wholly ncoldentnl was fully established. Thos. A. Evans was a well known nnd highly rospoctod citizen of El mira country and experienced In log driving. How hcu.fcuxo-.to.Josa. his llfo will, perhaps, forever remain a mystery. Deceased was a brother-in-law of Z. T. Flsk, was 50 yoart, old, and leaves a wlfo, a son aged 19 years and daughtor aged 12 yonrs. Ho car ried an accident policy for an amount not known by our informants. T&ec's no better ptepat Atfaa for the day's cfotles than a cap of piping hot Cocoa at break fast.
