N. iMOORES REPLIES TO P. G. DECKABACH. Ed. Jeurnal: I was much Inter ested In tho article from Mr. F. a. Deckabach In Sunday's Statesman Tho fair and good-tempjred manner in which ho treats tha high license question h commendable. Mr. Deck abach Is held tn high esteem In this community. If all those engaged In tho liquor business were possessed of his standing and character and conducted tho business along the lines ho recommended I am satisfied there would not bo such a prejudice against tho traffic as exists at pres ent. The active dtctational and of fensive participation of the liquor dealers in political affairs has cer tainly been Ill-advised. It has be come so that whenever anyone ns pires for political honors ho must patronize a bar or cater- to tholr trado or else ho. Is unmercifully fought nt the polls by tho saloon men and their minions. However, my only object Invtnklng up tho pen at tbla Uracils to regis ter my emphatic dissent to some of Mr. Deckabnch'a . conclusions, and, with duo respect, to challenge his statement that tho sontlmont of this city Is opposed to the high liconso or dinance I nm not convinced -that It is dslrablo to enact a prohibitory law for Salem. I supported tho high license measure bocauso I bollovo In Its provisions, and for the furtfior reason that a largo majority of my conBtltr.ients favor It. Will Mr. Deckabach bo willing to hnvo a referendum on tho bill? I will bo wllljng to abide by the result, and net accordingly. A. N. MOORES.
